How do I get rid of these black "lines" on screen?

Featured Replies

Disjointed tiles in the scenery layout . Nothing you can do.

I flew N from Half Moon Bay. Saw the black lines. Tried shadows and LOD settings changes, could not make them go away. Looks just like what you posted.

Slewing forward and backward in these two images (not flying, just slewing). Black lines pop in and out depending how close the plane is.

So, it's everybody, not just you.

Thanks. I saw something like this in the new SU6 sceneries in Austria river shores too and thought they were just shadows. So, now I understand from you that they are tiles. OK, so like you said, not much we users can do about how scenery tiles were laid. I can live with them.

Welp, I learned from this, you can fly under the Golden Gate Bridge (there is no artificial barrier beneath it in the default MSFS scenery).

It might be some sort of shadow. You could try to turn off shadows in graphics options.

Thanks. I turned off 'terrain' and 'contact' shadows and reduced 'shadow maps' to the lowest value possible from 1536 to 768. No change. The problem is still there. 😞

Thank you all.

That's the second graphic glitch in the San Francisco area. The firsr one made a runway in KOAK (about 10 miles east of San Francisco) unusuable (see below).

It's beginning to feel like FSX deja-vu and an Easter egg hunt for graphic bugs.

Laying out imagery on 3d meshes is a massive undertaking and tricky specially at the borders of water and land or between two meshes.

If the streaming of sat imagery is innovative in MFS, everything else leads to think that they used the FSX terrain engine. So yes, déjà vu. Morphing, coastal glitches, green roads, coloring hiatus between tiles.

Makes you wonder if X-plane will be able to compete and survive against MSFS. I viewed a video interview yesterday from FSExpo with Austin Meyer, founder of Xplane, over the weekend. He was basically downplaying imagery on 3D meshes because cars in them look squashed when you go near them since they are only simple pixels. This is a repeat of what he said a year ago right after the introduction of MFS. He was of course referring to MSFS also in this interview without mentioning names.

The first thing I thought of when he repeated that was who cares if you are 500 ft up in the air but the pixels look 3D and believable. It doesn't have to be an actual 3D object. I felt kinda sad for him because he knows his flight sims. But he just simply can't compete unless he partners with other big companies which means he'll have to give up some control of what he built up himself.

I’ve never been in XP so no comment.

As an old FS franchise user (including P3D), I have a mixed feeling. To see yet again these glitches is disappointing  after all the « next gen simulation » blah blah we were served but, in the other hand, the landscapes in this sim  are something that we have never seen before ! And this wins the day for me. My last flight from Kathmandu to Jiri a small and tricky dirt strip in Eastern Nepal with the Porter. was a testimony to it 😊´

Sad, but I think true, at this point. To my best experience, no setting does cure these black lines appearing and disappearing. in water. This is in Asobo's ballpark.

Best you/we can do make another voting thread over at the official forum. Or, if there is already one, vote for it and post the link here.

Kind regards, Michael

And please, keep XP12 out here. If you want, make a separate thread on this or the present (useful one) will inevitably derail.

NEVER set this file to read-only, it might trigger CTDs and other issues (especially during MSFS updates).

As a side note, I wonder how much of this type of activity is the root cause of so many CTDs.  I was editing the UserCfg.opt with notepad++ and every time I save it using notepad++ the sim would crash when loading my flight.  It would load 3 quarters of the way and boom, CTD.  I at first figured it was me setting things too high, so I would change it back and it would still crash, etc.  Went on for quite some time before I fixed a problem I caused 🙂  Somewhere in there I am sure I got mad at Asobo, although I never vented on message boards.

UserCfg.opt is in a very specific file format, I don't know if notepad++ would save the file in the same format?

Cheers, Rob.

@Rob_Ainscough Good point. I checked the UserCfg.opt file with a hex editor and I'm not seeing any non-ascii characters though. I'm wondering if MSFS checks unauthorized changes by calculating the file's hash values to verify file integrity. However, I did make some manual changes to the file previously by just using Windows notepad, and I don't remember that as having caused a crash to desktop.

I don't believe Rob was referring to the format of the file itself, rather the format of the text contained within the file. The file itself is a simple text file. The text within the file is a JSON like format (it does not appear to be actual JSON) which means that the placement of the text and punctuation is important. A misplaced or missing curly bracket can mess things up. So can a misspelled word.

Some programs look at the charset like UTF-8 for instance.
If a file was saved with another charset it could give problems I guess.

Maybe the encoding on the file matters (??).  Notepad++ has these options when you save, and altering it from whatever MS/Asobo want may be a problem?

Also, if you delete the file, will MSFS automatically regenerate it to a default version of that file?  Or could you potentially mess up your installation?
