USA Veterans Day - did you fly when you served?

Featured Replies

If so, post a photo of the type or types you flew.  T-41 and T-42 during my service.  Not as exciting as most, but it hooked me on aviation.

I like the stirrups. How'd it feel?.....Doug

Intel 10700K @ 5.1Ghz, Asus Hero Maximus motherboard, Noctua NH-U12A cooler, Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB 3200 MHz RAM, RTX 2060 Super GPU, Cooler Master HAF 932 Tower, Thermaltake 1000W Toughpower PSU, Windows 10 Professional 64-Bit, 100TB of disk storage. Klaatu barada nickto.

I didn't, but my Dad was an Aviation Machinists Mate assigned to Fleet Air Wing THREE out of Coco Solo Canal Zone.  He worked on flying boats, mainly PBM-3 Mariners.  What he remembers is being amazed they let an 18 year old work on aircraft engines.  At one point he was part of a maintenance det that worked in Galapagos Islands.    In the later part of the war the main threat was Japanese subs so the flying boats would patrol out to Galapagos and back.

They provided some stability, but really needed seat belts! 🤪

I never flew in the military. A close relative was in lots of air combat and never settled down in civilian life after discharge, combat fatigue.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

I never flew as a pilot in the military but had a bit of back seat time in an F-100F and a B-57 when I was assigned to the airmunitions test squadron at Hill AFB Utah.  I would beg for rides when they were firing rockets at different types of aircraft bunkers at the range on the west side of Salt Lake.

At Selfridge AFB I worked as an armament technician on F-86Ds and on the F-105D and F-105 Wild Weasels in Thailand during the Vietnam War.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

I rode in various Navy airplanes and helicopters, but the only thing I ever flew (if you can call it that) was an old trainer the recruiter let me play with a little when he flew into the local field when I was in law school. How could you resist that? The one box I never got to check was a COD trap. Caught up with Saratoga in Trieste.

I flew the T-38A Talon at Columbus AFB MS, C-141B Starlifter at Norton AFB CA, and the C-20/C-37 Gulfstream III-IV-V at Ramstein AB, Germany, Andrews AFB MD and Chievres AB, Belgium.
