@FBW and Fenix: is a phone number really necessary?!?

Well, if you're doing a project (like ours) with people from all over the world involved, Discord is pretty handy.

Discord attracts a large audience so it must have some usefulness for many.

Not for me and I do not get products having only Discord as a support media. Not a philosophy, just that I like the minimum of order and moderation that Discord cannot offer. Usenet is a little passé 😁...

A pity that a lot of newcomers in the business have not rather requested a sub-forum at Avsim instead of going Discord.

So you're not using WT's NXI?

I understand it's very handy for a small team that's working on a project!!! But for 'customer support'...? AVSIM also has members from all over the world... 😉 But I do understand it's different for you guys (and gals?) working on a freeware project. But imho companies like Fenix and SWS and any other companies that likes to stay in touch with its paying customers should stay away from Discord. And IF they want to use Discord they should make joining the discussion easier (so without phone verification). Take note that phone verification may be recommended but it's not mandatory: SWS doesn't use this level of security.

Anyway... I just was curious about this all and I can understand the FBW team prefering Discord even though that means I am (mostly) out of support. 😉 I really totally utterly respect and appreciate what you guys (and gals?) are doing for us! For free!

You just gotta love AVSIM. Comes to show forums can have their problems too. 😉

I use Discord extensively, but won't give my mobile phone number: the WT,REX and Kodiak 100 servers don't require it (yet).

That said, the problem with Discord is that it's hard to stick with a line of questions, since folks can post whatever they want, burying your questions in a sea of unrelated content.

Just curious, how is it handier than a forum at avsim for instance ?

Well, one of the most important things is that if a user starts nagging it's not a moderator who has to get involved and jugle between what's just acceptable and what's not. You get a warning and next time you are kicked out.  Works great.

It's mostly quick and you get the developers themself who answer the question.

Just try it, takes a little effort to get used  to it, but in my opinion it's  beats forums.

The appeal of Discord is the instantaneousness of it, and direct line to developers. People have become impatient and don't want to wait hours for a response. It's a much more chat/conversational style of discourse, and that can be handy for internal development uses. Then of course you have voice chat and screen sharing too.

Also Discord has tons of Plugins to help you with whatever you need to do.

For example World or Warcraft Raidplanners, funny things like Jukeboxes you can add to channels. Discord is like Teamspeak - with extra functionality. More a chat client than anything else.

Aaaaaaah, okay, wait a minute... I still fail to see how it beats forums BUT come to think of it... I suppose dedicated Discord users are using the app for it...? I also suppose those who don't like Discord (like me) are using the web version of it. I can see how an app, with notifications and what not, can be convenient for a.o. developers. It FEELS more like using WhatsApp, I suppose. I mean, you guys keep saying you can get in contact with devs directly, but well, you can also do that on a forum... but that probably feels less direct? (Just trying to understand the benefit of Discord... 😉 ) I can see how using the Discord app makes it seem as if you have a dev on WhatsApp and that feels totally different indeed, I guess.

All I can say is that I tried... trying Discord (Heavy Division, no phone).

And gave up!

No appetite for disorderly crowds whatever their nature. Evidently some are able to make sense out of chaos and this is OK, probably a matter of age.

Even the name sounds nasty.

Might be a question of age. Getting older, I come to be wary of spontaneity, to understand that reactivity and immediateness are two different things 😉.

Discord is, in a way, a new avatar of the usenet newsgroups from which we have shifted en masse to the forum format when it became operational about 20 years ago. It is funny to see the old media getting a new lease of life.
