Thinking of getting MSFS 2020

Featured Replies

Hello everyone and welcome to 2022.

I am currently a p3d user and also a real world IFR /VFR pilot endorsed on GA aircraft mainly the Cessna 182, Mooney, Cirrus and Diamond DA40.

I have been a VATSIM member for around 4 years

My computer specs currently are as follows

Motherboard    Gigabyte GA-Z590-UD

CPU    Intel i9-10900KF

Graphics card      Nvidia 1080TI 11GB VRAM

RAM         Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3000MHz

SSD          2x Samsung 980 1TB NVMe SSD  one is unused awaiting MSFS

CPU Cooler     Corsair H100i 480mm

I run 3 screens the main one for the Sim being a DELL Alienware 27 inch full GSYNC monitor at 2560x1440p

As I live in Australia and regionally my internet is a solid 10mbps but no faster. I appreciate that it will take a long time to download MSFS.

I have the Cessna rudder pedals  the logitech throttle quadrant and the Honecomb alpha flight yoke.

I should be grateful if I can have some views on whether this current setup will be suitable for GA flying in MSFS.

At some point I will upgrade my Internet to around 70mbps speed download but thats fixed wireless as no other options are available.

Thanking you all in advance

David Spackman

The CPU is OK, the GPU is still good for 1440p with some compromise (high detail, not ultra). But the Internet bandwidth is an issue because with 10 Mbps texture streaming will not be optimal. Upgrade it as soon as you can.

Have you considered Starlink satellite internet?  Much faster than current satellite internet with much better latency.  I've had it for about 8 months and regularly get 200-300Mbs download speeds with a latency around 20-30ms - easily good enough for gaming.

My land based internet gave me between 10-25Mbs.  Download speeds for MSFS were about 10Mbs, but on Starlink the last time I installed MSFS I was getting 100Mbs download from MS servers!

Hi David, if you want something that looks realistic then MSFS is a good option. It's been many years since I have flown FSX or P3D but I will bet my shoes that MSFS is years ahead of what you are familiar with. It's not perfect, but it is pretty good.

And if you like flying a 172/182, Mooney and DA40 in the sim then you will likely be pleased with (even) the Carenado Mooney, and very likely the DA (more so with the Mod available on flightsim.to).

Yes.

It's going to take a while to download, and install the updates, but in the end it's worth it I believe. Your patience will reward you with incredible scenery, pretty good weather and some great aircraft to explore.

I was a long time P3D user (though I still have XP11). I had to dump P3D in order to install MSFS (not enough HD space or even spare SATA slots).

Your hardware is fine. I run MSFS on an old i7. Low framerates, but not so horrific as to be unflyable/unenjoyable.

I miss the wonderful A2A aircraft, but don't miss too much else in P3D - apart from maybe the better realism for procedures and ATC. I'm a fairly "casual" flyer - and no longer do any Vatsim type stuff. I'm happy to just enjoy the stunning visuals.

IMHO, there are three problems you might need to take note of with MSFS:

1) Internet speed/bandwidth. Asobo's insistence on using a cloud-based system can be a real nuisance, though I can't see how else it can be done. We simply can't download (and keep updated) all that world data, so streaming is a good solution ... *in theory*. In practice though - no matter how good your Internet connection is, the bottleneck is always with the MSFS servers. Live weather goes up and down like a word not allowed's drawers and photogrammetry often fails (but that at least can be cached). I wouldn't be too fussed about initial install/download times - it's not a procedure you (hopefullly) have to repeat that often. Just get it going and go to bed 😉

2) No real/decent support for Track-IR type stuff. Not really my thing so my info may be wrong/outdated.

3) Multiple monitors. I also have a three-monitor setup - and have used the two side screens for windowed utilities etc. ... BUT ... I was really hoping I could extend the sim across all three. Sadly, not possible as yet (unless you're prepared to accept horrific distorttion). It's been slated as "some time in the future", but there's no way of knowing when they'll actually implement it.

All in all, I don't regret the move from P3D. MSFS will certainly improve - much at P4D's expense, I suspect.

Totally incorrect, Track IR works perfectly with MSFS.

Hello all those of you that replied. I really do thank you for your input. After consideration I will try to download MSFS after the next sim update. If the internet connection proves to slow then I shall upgrade. There is no Starlink where I am currently so it will have to be Fixed Wireless. I just hope it is stable enough. Thank you all once again for your valuable input.

Kind regards

I suspect 10Mbs will be acceptable flying GA in remote areas but will probably not cope with photogrammetry 3D cities which will likely appear all "melted" and apocalyptic.  it may also struggle in busy airports with lots of AI traffic.

Just try it and see.

Do be aware some patches for the game extend to multiple Gb of data so patch day may be painful.

I ran for half a year with 6-7 Mbps internet download speed.

It does take forever to get the sim installed, but once you are up and running, it is actually enough to fly.

Check whether your phone company doesn’t offer a 4G internet solution.

why not do a tryout via the gamepass for 1 dollar one month.
