Monitor Upgrade Question

Featured Replies

I currently have a Dell U3415W display (3440x1440).  I am in the process of upgrading my PC that has a better cpu than i do now and a 3080Ti.  If i were to invest in a 4k monitor at the same size (assuming there is something similar), would I see a noticeable visual difference then what I have now?  Would my system be able to handle that?  I haven't  seen anything flight sim wise in 4k so I am not sure if I would appreciate a monitor upgrade if there wouldn't be a noticeable difference than what I have now; visually and performance.  I hope that makes sense!

Well first thing that comes to mind is they will not be "the same size" as 4K will be narrower but taller for the same diagonal size.

Ah.  I did not know that. Thanks!

Personally I like the aspect ratio of the 3440x1440 monitors. 4K might look sharper, but you get a different ratio again.

Your new system will probably run it just fine, but FPS will be lower than with the current monitor.

What I have done is to increase the rendering in game to about 130, and the image I get is way crisper than on native 3440x1440, even on a monitor of that same resolution.

Do you find you have problems w/ AA, jaggies, shimmering?  I don't seem to and have the same display.  I also like ultra wide AR as for me it fits with cockpit aspect ratio, and curved is great.   I have a 3080Ti and at FT's KLAS, RD's CYOW, FSDT's KORD and many other complex airports I can see up to 11.7Gb of VRAM in use.  Going to 4K increases demand for VRAM by close to double, all else being equal.  You may be able to get away with running AA at lower levels to compensate for this w/o image quality degredation but as well total processing overhead goes up substantially w/ 4K v 3440x1440.  Of course, viewing distance is a major factor as well.  Another arguably important issue is to consider a G-sync display with 120Hz refresh rate in particular--this allows you to set in-sim frame lock at 20, with Vsync enabled, and have stutter-free smooth video at 40fps, which currently MSFS is able to maintain provided you're using 3440x1440.  Bump that up to 4K and you will be dialing back detail settings to cope absolutely positively.

As I posted in another, suggest you stick with common aspect ratios what work with power of 2.

I would recommend 3840 x 2160 for 3080Ti.  The smaller the 4K monitor (physical) the less "jaggies" you'll see at a shorter view distance (i.e. from a Desk).

Cheers, Rob.

Rob, I read your thread on the other site. Could you explain why a 2^2:y apect ratio is better for AA than other ratios x:y with x unequal 2^2? Is this empirical or are there any official (scientific) explanations for that? I mean, 3440:1440=21:9=7:3 (which I own btw) is on the market since some years, NVIDIA/AMD and game producers should be aware of it.

I am running a BenQ EW3270U 32-inch 4K HDR monitor on a PC with i5 9600KF stock, 1660ti and 32 GB RAM. Here's what works for me in MSFS, with nvidia settings at performance level and flying FBW A32NX mostly -

  1. 1440P with render scale at 130, and rest of the settings at high end, gives a steady stutter free 30 FPS locked.
  2. 4K at render scale set to 70 also gives a steady 30 FPS with the occasional stutter in large airports.

I think I can live the above until I'm able to afford a 3080ti 🙂 Don't think you should have any issues running 4K on your config. Cheers.

Many people may not have the space for a 4K TV the smallest size being 43”.

4K monitors max out at 32” making them ideal for restricted space. And the smaller display makes the image sharper than larger ones.

With that PC you could up the render scale in sim, and with a smidgen of sharpening in NVCP (I have just 10%), you can get image quality not far off 4K while maintaining the same aspect ratio.

I’d try it before splashing out on a new panel.

Thanks for this!

I had my monitor set to 100Hz but changed it to 120Hz.  As you suggested, frame lock at 20 with Vsync enabled does indeed give me a very smooth 3440x1440 display.

Great!  I have the OP's display and it's good for 30Hz, or 60Hz, so I'm limited to locked frames of 30.  This doesn't bother me but I know some swear they appreciate the diff between 30 and 40 fps.  What continues to annoy the hell out me of is the stutter that happens when the white spinning logging indicator fires in the lower right part of the screen and also the ATC-related hiccough that often happens when ATC talks/logs.   For reasons I don't appreciate I seem to be the only one who cares!  I've zendesked them several times but they both persist.  I turn off the spinner by toggling Dev Mode on/off, and also turn off ATC panel displaying thru the toolbar.
