User Tip Removing 'Sharpen' graininess...

Thanks for the heads up.  Simming in 4k I probably don't need it enabled so I'll give it a go.

I garner that you will be very pleased with Sharpen (as 0 'off'!) To my view, with default PostProcess Sharpen as on, it looks like my monitor is composed of micro-sand colored silica.

It takes only less than a minute to call up the .cfg file to make sure it has not 'auto-changed back to Sharpen 1.  Also, it usually does after every type of update. As soon as I update, I go and place a '0' once more.

I've just tried this on my 1080p monitor (GTX1080 graphics card), and it ruined the sharpness of the Piper Warrior's instruments completely.  Not for me, I'm afraid.

That is not available to me. There is no "Microsoft Flight Simulator"  in that location.  Is that for steam version?

Yes, it's the steam version.C:\Users\YOUR NAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator\usercfg.opt

After I entered usercfg.opt in my search application it took about 5 seconds to find it (searching on the whole C drive). There are a half dozen free 'search' utilities for Windows on the internet to download an install. The Windows search window is ridiculously slow and doesn't have worthy search options either.

Tried this, but found no difference detectable to my eyes. Several points: I have graphics settings on Ultra, and the resolution is excellent regardless of the Sharpen setting. Secondly, my usercfg file is headed "Version 66", and the PostProcess and Sharpen lines appear only once. There is no section for VR as far as I can tell.

Thanks for the tip. I'm always keen to give these things a try.

Unfortunately on my low to middle end PC with an average monitor I didn't notice any significant difference. Perhaps this is one for the 4K folks with young eyesight.😉

My middle-aged eyesight is a natural way to "de-sharpen" 🙂 hehe

Nothing like these settings on my system...C:\Users\YOUR NAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator\usercfg.opt?

I installed MSFS2020 on it's own drive "d" and named it Flight Simulation-Gaming with the program in it's own folder Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.

Simply cannot find usercfg.opt anywhere, not even on drive C under user the AppData folder?

Any help would be appreciated, Darryl

In the same section if you change "eyeadaptation" to 0 does it change the effect that the sky gets washed out when looking down or the cockpit is too dark when looking straight ahead. Has anyone tried this?

Some do not know, that MSFS has a Post Process 'Video Sharpen' feature turned on by default. This will lead to a 'grainy' look to your simulation.

To turn this default off, do the following:

Open your BASE FOLDER location for MSFS, and at the bottom you will see a file called:

UserCfg.opt

Use Notepad ++ to open file.

Once open, scroll down to

PostProcess

In that range, the fourth heading will be Sharpen 1

Make that 1 to a 0, and then press save in Notepad ++

You are done, and can close Notepad ++

I'm sure that the next run of MSFS for you, will be a much more beautiful screen rendition, of the graphics.

To turn Sharpen back on...merely go back and enter a 1 where you put a 0, of you prefer the look as default. Press Notepad ++ SAVE and you are back to a default view for this Post Process setting.

My question is has anyone tried this in VR?  Does it improve the look when using VR (Reverb G2)?😶

Yes. But there is an option within the program itself to do the same thing. No need to mess with the configuration file for this one.

I have MSFS also installed on another drive other than 'C'.  It's easy to find the file.  If you can find your Community Folder,  just back out of that folder two times, and you will be at your view where it will be at the bottom of the folders. So,  find your Community Folder, and then back out of that folder two times...and there you go...UserCfg.opt is there in front of you.

My thanks to the OP, @Sesquashtoo, for the great tip about negating the default sharpening. I didn't know this sharpening was occurring in the background. Since I removed it, my display looks much better. Thank you!

You're quite welcome.  This was brought out about more than a year ago, but I thought to bring it up again, as some mostly likely forgot about turning this off, or had never even heard (new users) that one could...  If someone is viewing at 3.5 to over 4K resolution, the difference in graphics quality is for me, night and day, and I have as some say, very old eyes, and I can certainly see the difference between Sharpen 1 and Sharpen 0.

David,  please remember to check this setting once and awhile, with  MSFS's propensity to change things YOU didn't not try to. Also, after every update, just assume that PostProcess/Sharpen is set back to 1 and therefore will need to be manually turned off with '0' again, if that is the way you prefer the UserOpt.cfg setting as 'your' default.  It certainly is mine. 🙂
