SU8 - Still stutters with addon mesh

Featured Replies

I had hoped for a fix, but flying over Vancouver Island, I have a choice to fly with screwed up coastlines, or semi-regular stutters.

Reported this to Zendesk after the last WU, when this started.. guess I need to report it one more time..

Vancouver Island mesh, which was required ever since WU2 when Asobo screwed up our coastlines.

The mesh has worked great until the latest WU, when the stutters started.  One theory: to make it work better on XBox.. 😉

When you say "add-on" mesh, is this a mesh developed by a 3rd party developer?  If so, maybe you're better off contacting the 3rd party developer to fix it.

Note what it says in the description:

The elevation data is applied through terraforming rectangles, thus loaded at a certain distance from the player. When travelling fast or at high altitude (wide range of view) there might be too many new rectangles loaded simultaneously and thus stutters might occur.

You may want to check out the Orbx forums (or was it FSDeveloper?).  Seems like I recall some discussion about different techniques for mesh creation in MSFS, and seems like there is a right way and a not so right way to do it.

However as you mention the various SU's may have broken it along the way.  That would not surprise me in the least, either.

It worked just fine for many months...  Asobo changed something..

Yeah, but the point is, Asobo isn't go to undo their code changes just for a mesh created by an arbitrary 3rd party dev who creates freeware mods, and not a very renown 3rd party dev either.  If this were a renown 3rd party dev like Orbx or FBW, maybe Asobo would undo their code changes, maybe.  And if the bug affected a lot of 3rd party paid add-ons that are being sold in the MSFS Marketplace, then Asobo would probably fix their code.  For some arbitrary 3rd party dev who created this mod, Asobo probably isn't going to undo their code changes.  You're much better off asking the 3rd party dev of that mod, PlaneGuy04 to fix that mod so that his/her mod is compliant with SU8.  Going the other way around and asking Asobo to fix their code so that it's compliant with PlaneGuy04's mod ... ... good luck, I doubt that will ever happen in the life cycle of MSFS.

Toggle Freelook camera command no longer works, so, yes...it wouldn't be the first time they've broken something.

I expect MSFS/Asobo to provide a better mesh in the first place to make mesh add-ons unnecessary.

Yes it does. They just changed it. Previously it was just middle mouse button for on and off. Now it is middle mouse button for on. And right mouse button for off.

I had this mesh installed, too. I wouldnt speak about stutters, it made the simulator completely unusable for me The simulator stalled for several seconds, audio dropped out, then I could continue for a couple of minutes, when the artifacts started again. It took me an hour to identify the issue via a nesting procedure, and only later I saw confirmation from the description page of that mesh.

I agree this is really sad as the coastlines etc. look much better, but I deleted it for now. Maybe we can persuade ORBX to apply their super-mesh-technique to Vancouver Island one day, given they have a traditional connection to the region.

Kind regards, Michael

I was using various add-on meshes around the Alps, for Austria, Germany, Italy and Slovenia and was getting severe loadpauses (what you call stuttering) while flying along in Switzerland and Lake Constance. After reading this thread here I gave it a try and switched those meshes off. And lo and behold, pauses gone, sim smooth again.

Too bad, since the default Austrian and German Alps, even with the DACH Sim Update, still looks much too low res compared to the add-on mesh available.

Same here. As mentioned by others, MS/Asobo MUST HAVE CHANGED something in the background, because all those mesh-addons did work nicely not so long time ago. Noteworthy, ORBX NZ and Himalaya mesh seems still to work without stuttering and sound crackling, but afaik, they use a different mesh technique.

In that case, why don't they change the camera command to FREELOOK ON ?

Presently, it's still FREELOOK TOGGLE, which...it really isn't, now.
