Weather Radar

Featured Replies

I know this is on Asobo roadmap, but I cant help feeling frustrated that after being released for a 18 months, we still dont have an API that expose the weather to 3rd party devs. Just reading the progress on the Leonardo Maddog, we are starting to see more complex airliners coming in, and it is a shame that these guys still dont have access to weather data. So far from what I've read, it seems the Fenix guys figured something out, but Asobo I think it's really a shame you haven't put more focus on this.. anyways I will stop ranting but I am sure I am not the only one feeling that way!

It is not on the roadmap. Sadly it has been marked “not planned.”

I think you're confusing the request to open the entire wx system to 3rd party devs (which I wish they would do) with the need for reading certain wx data.  At last glance, a custom api-custom-weather-radar is planned for release sometime this year.

Hello, Exposing weather data through a specific API is in our roadmap for the upcoming year.

Edit:  I'd just be very happy to be able to easily change the ALTIMETER on the premium Longitude after 18 months and a recent SU dedicated to fixes.

Got it. “Exposing” being the key word. Not able to control, just read.

yes exactly! the weather radar is a tool we use and rely on to keep us away from the "bad stuff" (off course these days we get weather info on our EFBs, granted it's not real time, and from ATC) but I can think of quite a few occasions when the radar kept me out trouble.

I know I am not a developer and dont know anything about what it takes to code this, I just can't wrap my head around why they made weather data available on default gauges (granted it is nothing like a real weather radar return lol), but not on WASM API ... anyways, let's hope it doesn't take them another 18 months to deliver. I have not seen much news from the HIFI guys on AS for FS2020, that would be a great tool to have in FS20....

Anyone know if PMDG have solved the weather radar issue?

Its not a PMDG problem to solve. Fenix isn't going to have a WXR on release either.

But for the airplane devs, they just need it to be "exposed." That is, they need to be able to read the weather data for the weather radar for the specific airplane. The 3rd party airplane devs do not need to "control" the weather in MSFS.

So from my understanding, what Asobo is doing is enough for the airplane devs.

Maybe they figured out how to make an FSX style “cloud finder” like CaptSim did back in the day and not an actual radar. If the data isn’t available to get accurate precipitation returns from the sim, I’m not sure how they’d figure out some magic when PMDG and others can’t yet do it.

I vaguely remember them showing a picture showing the weather radar and it looked better than just a bitmap, but off course now I cant find it anywhere 🙂  (looked at their discord and YT channel), after searching their discord channel there is no official word from Fenix about it so maybe it is not going to happen after all...

It was the terrain on the nav display you saw.

From Aamir himself. Here's the quote in his discord channel: "Specifically - we are at the mercy of Asobo when it comes to WXR. When they allow, we will support. For now, no WXR because we can't get that information from the sim."

The picture was of the terrain mapping system, not weather radar. They do look somewhat similar. Both Fenix and PMDG will have working terrain on release. They are using a stand-alone terrain database that does not require extracting terrain information from the sim itself. That is exactly what a real EGPWS does.

Weather radar will depend on Asobo creating a WASM API. Until they do, no WASM add-on will be able to access the location of clouds or precip. That feature is already available in default aircraft programmed in JavaScript/HTML, so the data does exist in the sim environment - they just need to complete the API so the data can also be accessed by WASM projects.

This is probably a dumb question,  but I'm confused because I have 3rd party aircraft with weather radar?  Is it because Carenado has some kind of close relationship with Asobo?

The PMS GTN750 has weather radar as well,  but I'm not sure where it get's it data from.   Thought it was from simconnect.
