March 9, 20224 yr These kinds of films don't appeal to me anymore. I liked, and still like, Star Trek NG. But only on occasion anymore. I saw all the Star Wars film when they came out but wouldn't bother anymore. Now I prefer old feel good movies. Last night I watched a 1940 flick called Going My Way with Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald. It won Oscars for best actor, Bing Crosby, and best picture. It was about a priest (Bing Crosby) who was sent to an old failing church in an old Irish neighborhood to revive it. The old priest (Barry Fitzgerald) is in his 70s and had been there for 45 years. The Bing Crosby Character turns the neighborhood ruffians into a choir, solves some problems for neighborhood parishioners, and writes a song that brings in enough money to save the church. And in the final scene the old priest's 90 year old mother is brought from Ireland to surprise him. It was just nice to watch. I doubt a picture like that could be made today or if it were made would get much of a box office. There was no violence or special effects. I don't think you're particularly into science fiction though are you? 12 hours ago, birdguy said: here was no violence or special effects. Noel What! And no aliens or spaceships? No time travellers or interdimensional travellers or worm holes??? How can that be a movie? 😁

March 10, 20224 yr How well I remember that day in late May, 1977, when my secretary walked into the office just giddy about a movie she'd seen the night before. Something called Star Wars. It's the only thing she could talk about all day. There was R2-D2, C-3PO, and some guy named Ben. I've seen that movie now more times than I can count. And every time I see it it takes me back to 1977. March 10, 20224 yr It's just a shame that everything Star Wars related after The Empire Strikes Back has been a pale shadow of those two movies. Yes, even Return of the Jedi was weak compared to those two. The prequel movies were nowhere near as good, and the less said about the last two movies in the latest trilogy, the better! The last time Betty and I were in a theater we had gift tickets. The movie was an animated one called Brave. I think I would have liked it, but the sound was so loud we had to leave. 6 hours ago, martin-w said: I don't think you're particularly into science fiction though are you? No Martin, I'm not. I used to be. I've read Heinlen and Bradbury. But for some reason my interest in science fiction has waned. I'm reverting to the past and things that are more familiar to me. They make me feel more comfortable. Maybe that's a natural process of aging. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.

March 10, 20224 yr The Obi Wan show is the first one of the Disney things that I think I would like. The Mandalorian intrigued me until baby Yoda showed up. Of course I have never actually seen the show -- it was just that baby Yoda was an odd marketing gimmick. Obi Wan looks like it could be good but I don't have Disney+ and probably won't even though it looks tempting. As for changing tastes - of course that happens...I was into romantic comedies for a period of my life and I seem to be nearing the end of my horror phase but Im not sure -- Ill know when I get there. Empire Strikes Back really was the best but I think its age related. Star Wars had been the best until that one.(and I mean the best movie I had ever seen -- it just had a feeling I related... it was actually a medieval knights story set in a science fiction realm - and a comedy as well) None of the prequels were 'good' but the third one wasn't 'bad' as I recall. The most recent set (excluding the Han Solo story because I did not see it) were all pretty good... pretty darn good in some cases. A tendency I saw in much older people when I was young, and have been vigilant about ever since, lest it come upon me unawares as well as I get older. It caused the birth of my "one new thing every day" mentality before I even hit my teens, and has sustained my determination to stay engaged ever since. We are all connected..... March 10, 20224 yr The fight between Darth Sidious and Mace Windu/other three Jedi Knights in Revenge of the Sith was absolutely pathetic. They made an incredibly bad job of that, and I was so disappointed. In fact, I was generally disappointed with all of the lightsabre duels in the prequels (apart from the fight between Darth Maul and Qui Gon Jinn/Obi Wan Kenobi). The Star Wars movies after the original trilogy are a good example of what happens when the "vision" of the original creator is lost and replaced with marketing, executive thinking, and bean-counters in control. Only after the films and property began to be firmly rejected in disgust by audiences have the corporate heads at Disney turned in desperation back to "creatives" like Favreau to "save the franchise".
