March 29, 20224 yr Hello, New computer arriving today (hopefully). I'm not reusing any of the bits from the old one so I wondered if it could be used for anything? It's an i7 6700K, 32gb with a 980Ti. I could just try and sell it but unsure how much that would command. The other option is I keep it, but would it actually be useful for anything MSFS related in the future? I'm aware I could run vPilot on it but that seems slightly overkill. Is there anything in the pipeline that might benefit me holding on to it? Many thanks

Might not be what you had in mind, but I'd bet you work with or know someone who could really use that old computer you're having trouble finding a use for. And the "warm fuzzy feeling" you'll get is worth any monetary loss. -J 13700KF | RTX 4090 @ 1440 | 64GB DDR5 | 2 x 1TB SSDs | 1TB M.2 NVMe
March 29, 20224 yr Moderator @mikethe6th, if you had P3D it could have be used for a moving map or an ATC program like Radar Contact. Purchasing a licence for WideFS is all that is needed. Whether anything is suitable for MSFS I’ll leave for others to suggest. Ray (Cheshire, England). March 29, 20224 yr With modern processor cores barely being used when running MSFS @ higher resolutions, I don't think a second computer is needed at all. Just sounds like wasted energy to me... Selling it for a fair price would be indeed the best option. March 29, 20224 yr Agree with @GCBraun, sell it while it still holds a reasonably good value. That "old" PC has the same spec as my MSFS PC and it runs MSFS pretty decently. A lot of people would be very happy with a PC like that, so you could get some decent cash for it. If it lies around in your garage for another year while you search for a reason to keep it, it's only going to depreciate further as it continues to fall behind the tech curve. March 29, 20224 yr Keep it.. Sooner or latter it may become really useful. Running satellite apps on the 2nd PC over the network, like when one day you might find interesting to have a more sophisticated cockpit setup, and MFS becomes ready to do it, or simply using it to run navigation or flight planning tools, etc.... March 29, 20224 yr I like running a second PC with dual monitors. This way I can run Vatspy, ActiveSky, AivlaSoft EFB, Vpilot, SimToolKit Pro, Discord, FlyChrono, SmartCars, Navagraph Charts, etc all on my second PC and keep my resources free for P3D and 2020 on the Main PC. Many of these programs also work for 2020. March 29, 20224 yr If you have a smart home (TV, tablets, Phones, Assistants, lights, etc.) you could use it as your Hub - for all your hard media (dvd's, blurays, downloaded movies) music (CD's), pictures... then all your devices can access all this media from one place. I turned my old PC (i7 4770k, with 16gb RAM, and a gtx870, with a 32" 2k monitor) into a media hub and Plex server. I have over 18gb of music, 570gb of dvds and BR and nearly 11gb of family photos all in one place. I can grant access to it all to my family and friends via the internet. But if you don't wanna do all that - it took weeks to burn all my dvds the drive - give it to a family member or charity - pay it forward. March 29, 20224 yr I would sell it while the 980Ti still has some value, GPU prices are dropping rapidly right now. Or keep the PC for older games/emulation, if you are into that kind of thing... I have about a half dozen "puters" ranging from Pentium 4 & AMD Athlon 3000 with Win98se to my main rig with i7-10700K and Win 10. What can I say, Flight Sim 2000 is fun to fire up every once in a awhile. March 29, 20224 yr Keep it and use it as described above by a few different peeps. My main rig is for my flight simming (and games) only. My second, older rig is for everything else....that is, email, video streaming (YouTube, Hulu, Netflix etc), music listening, BluRay movie watching, flight planning, Little NavMap moving map while flying, charts up for planning and while flying, being on Avsim while flying...the uses are endless. My second rig has two screens hooked up, so that I can be watching something whilst also having my flight apps on the second screen. It's all very handy. Someone above mentioned getting rid of the second PC as opposed to keeping it, as one of their reasons was to keep your setup simplified. My answer to that, is that in my case, having the second PC setup HAS simplified my setup. I no longer have a TV near my PC (or in the room at all), I don't have a stereo/sound sytem in the room anymore. All of that is handled by the second PC. In fact, I am able to type this post on AVSIM whilst I am happily flying on my other rig. Very simplified in my view. To each their own though. This is simply one way to do things. There is also a lot to be said for donating the PC to someone in need, or using in some other fashion in your home as a media center etc. AMD Ryzen 9900X3D & ASUS X870E Gaming Plus MB, w/64 Gb GSkill DDR5 RAM, PNY RTX 5090 GPU, lots of SSD's and M.2 drives, HAVN Case, Virpil VPC Panels 2 and 3, Virpil Constellation Alpha Stick, Virpil Rotor TCS Plus w/ Hawk-60 Collective grip, TM TCA Yoke Boeing Edition, TM HOTAS A-10 and F/A-18 Sticks and TM TPR Rudder pedals.
