FBW vs. Fenix for Casual Airbus Flyer

How was your first landing? 🙂

Well, let's say that some passengers may have asked for a refund 😉

I really do wish it would be possible to save flights (unless I'm doing something wrong, things are screwed up once I load a Fenix flight). I could just save it at the TOD and then practice my flow on the descent. It's a bit tedious to have to start a new full flight every time.

Do some touch and goes, years ago before Level D sims, that is the way Airline pilots practice landings. They still do in the Air Force with C 130s.

I mean I would argue that between the two Fenix might actually be better as long as the person is ok with not having direct integration (that's already iffy on FBW) with the in sim ATC because while I love FBW, Fenix having the fuel and cargo loading all in the EFB in one location vs split between EFB and MCDU for example in the FBW, and the more complete VNAV implementation......or having VNAV at all if you don't use experimental.......might actually make it easier for a casual flyer to pick it up (ignoring the obvious price difference).

I practice doing circuits with touch n goes and go arounds. Load up 5k kg fuel then keep flying till I have to do a full stop landing.

The MCDUs work independently, so you can have Flight plan on one screen and something else on the other.  The FBW only allows 1 MCDU, the other one is just a duplicate.

Ok.  Not a big deal really.

I dont use VNAV only LNAV.  I manually control my desired height for my needs 🙂  Take off, set desired altitude and climb rate with reasonable speed.  THen engage AP and LNAV etc.  No need for VNAV.

I had never flown a serious airliner before in MSFS (or previous flight sims), i.e. anything beyond the basic default planes. It goes without saying that I had never tried the FBW.

Based on the reviews (particularly since the update) and the desire for a new challenge, I decided to go for the Fenix. My fear was clear: I have kids and a demanding job, and worried that I could not find the time to fly it.

Well, based on one or two YT tutorials, I managed to get acquainted with the plane, go through the checklist and understand everything to get the Fenix in the air within about 2-3 hours. Did it again last night on my own last night. This thing is amazing, absolutely stellar.

Tonight is my next challenge: landing the beast 🙂

Doesnt it have a quick start option to spawn with plane running and ready to taxi?

I really dont need one if my flight plan is imported from the world planner!!  Just take off, set my altitude and climb rate and speed then engage auto pilot.  Fast and easy.  Dont need to sit planning and entering a bunch of data points into the MCDU.  No time for that.  World planner does that flawlessly.

Each to their own, I use Simbrief.  Hardly ever use the world planner at all, Simbrief does a much better job.  Most if not all aircraft have simbrief integration nowadays.

I think we can safely say the Fenix A320 is not for you. 😉

More suited for the C 172, I would say.

I guess everyone knows you can start a flight with only the destination and it starts you a few miles out from the designated airport on final. Not really far enough out for the TOD, but enough to practice landings. You just restart to try it again. I guess you could change the weather each time too to get different landing variables.

Not as realistic as circuits but its fine for only practicing landings.

I once thought just keep the FBW, Use the experimental and it's updated twice a day. It already does everything.

I bought Fenix and it's noticeably more solid, feels heavier, the taxi speed doesn't get away from you, the sound set is better, some things are deeper/more polished systems-wise, it gives you warnings about everything slightly mis-configured, the TCAS TA/RA  is wonderfully done....

Does all of this matter? - not really. You could stick with FBW and still have a beautiful experience.

It's quite offensive for c172 users.

Missing the PMDG DC6 in MSFS 2024 (she's here, but...).

I mean, they use different engines. The neo taxi speed is realistic.
