Hello,

Anyone upgraded from a I7-10700K to a AMD 5800X3D ?
What can I expect at 4K ?

At the moment I am running the I7-10700K @ 4.8GHZ all cores and 3600 memory CL16.
Around 800 euro is the cost to upgrade to the 5800X3D (including mainboard).
And maybe I can sell the I7 and motherboard afterwards.

But what can I really expect.
Yes I know al lot of YouTube benchmarks but would really like to know from real simmers in this forum.

Thanks.

MSI Tomahawk Z790, I7-13700K, DDR5 6000mhz, MSI 4090, 3x SSD 980 PRO, Corsair 360 Liguid CPU cooler, Corsair H1200V2 power.

That depends on your GPU and your performance limitations. If you're GPU limited (likely, at 4K), you can expect an improvement of 0 FPS, since your CPU is still going to be bottlenecked by your GPU.

That's a good start. I'd suggest running MSFS in Dev mode and taking a look at the execution times of your CPU and GPU to ascertain which takes longer. It might actually be the case that the 3090Ti is faster than the CPU at 4K. In that case, a faster CPU is going to give you more performance. How much, I can't tell. Probably not earth-shatteringly much, since you're already on pretty much the best hardware you can buy, and at 4K the amount the CPU contributes to the overall performance is lower, anyway.

Well that is compared to a I9-12 gen cpu. (i9-12900 instead of mine I7-10700)

Yes I Know but Raptor lake benchmarks are out later this week, If you want to spend money look at the latest tech.

If it is solely based on MSFS performance the 5800x3D is still the big winner. It’s 22% faster than the 12900ks on its best day. There is good reason to believe the 13900 won’t out perform it and even if it does I doubt it will by much. Cache is proving to be what matters in MSFS not MHZ so don’t get caught up in old school thinking that’s not backed by data from MSFS.

I would save the money and buy the next gen CPU or put it towards a better video card.
Waste of money even if you get a slightly smoother performance since better ways to allocate the money.
If I look at MSFS benchmarks in general (not specifically for the x3D), about 70% of them are invalid.

The new AMD CPUs are available now, the 7000 series. If I was changing from Intel at this point, I would rather look at the 7000 series than the 5000 series. The reason is that 5000 series is end of the line, and 7000 is the start of another. So you could in theory swap your chip out in another 4 years without changing motherboard or RAM.

7800x3D and 7950x3D are coming eventually, but I don't know when.
I don't know how much difference it really makes, as noted, all the benchmarks are mostly invalid.

MSFS is probably the hardest game to benchmark ever made, you really have to do it using the camera mode, not while flying.
Everyone does it while flying, which makes it mostly invalid. There are a couple of "sort of valid" ways to do it while flying, but
then you have to normalize the results against the camera FPS, which no-one does, which leaves them mostly invalid.

Should be Feb.

The time to make a decision is January after the CES event.
By that time the early adopters have discovered the main issues with the new range motherboards and CPUs - also bios revisions will have been released to make platforms more stable.

CES will give you a clue as to what is coming (particulary TI / Super / X3D etc)

Besides the fact AMD is supposedly announcing the 7800/7950x3D at CES with release later in January, another benefit of waiting is DDR5 prices will drop (hopefully).
