Coming Soon: PADU Unalaska Airport

Featured Replies

Saw Orbx tweet about the following upcoming airport for MSFS - Yet to be released but looking at the screenshots it looks pretty good.

We are pleased to announce that one of the most scenic airports in Alaska has finally found its way to Microsoft Flight Simulator - PADU Unalaska Airport!

This is the latest from Matteo Venanziani whose previous works include Burbank, Skiathos and Van Nuys for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

PADU is located on Unalaska Bay on the Aleutian Island of Umaknak and is sometimes referred to as Dutch Harbor Airport. It was renamed "Tom Madsen Airport" in honour of a bush pilot who was killed in an aeroplane accident in 2022.

The airport features a short 4,500ft runway bordered on one side by a steep drop-off into the ocean and a hill to the North. With the ocean at both runway ends, this airport presents a very challenging approach and landing. Considering that 1/5th of all flights are cancelled due to the weather and short runway, Unalaska Airport is not for the faint-hearted!

In addition to the airport that has been beautifully recreated by Matteo, the entire town has been modelled as well as historical landmarks such as  Holy Ascension Orthodox Church and WWII remnants on Bunker Hill.

Wow beautyful!! Finally the Canada update a few weeks ago also awakens the Alaska area a little bit for Asobo and third party developers so we will get some interesting adventurous harbors bases and airports.

I wish MSFS had a few more water runways so Amphibians and float planes which are all over in Alaska could be flown more often. Onlyh one I know of is Lake Hood next to PANC .

Ketchikan, Junuea and a really good freeware of PAKD all have seaplane bases that I know off of the top of my head. Not sure about the default Juneau but the one that comes with the ORBX Alaska mesh has it.

But on to the topic, this Unalaska looks incredible, like the old ORBX we used to know. We need more of these please!

Is it done yet? When will it be released? Will it be freeware or payware? How much will it cost? Any updates on the progress? Will it work for Xbox? Can I be a beta tester? How's the performance in VR?

What, no Deadliest Catch reference, LOL. Now we can fly the Snow Crab fisherman to Dutch Harbor.

Well, as long as Asobo does not get this bloody snow coverage fixed and implemented correctly, I will for now pass all addons that are in areas affected by this. No fun in using those addons 90% of the time with weather presets instead of live weather just because Asobo is unable to get this sorted... btw: if you are also annoyed by this snow coverage "bug", plz head over and vote: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/will-snow-coverage-be-improved-some-day/552109
