Hello folks,
I've got an AM4 platform already and I am very happy with it, although MSFS is CPU limited in most complex airports.
But given the information and videos found on the net, I wonder if I'd better replace my 5950x with a 5800x3D.
I don't really like the idea of a CPU downgrade but I only use my PC for office, internet and FS and I don't really need the power of the 5950x actually.
As I'm sure I won't upgrade my PC for several years, I don't need to wait for AM5 or go back to Intel with DDR5.

I hesitate, and any input about the difference between the 5950x and the 5800x3D in regard with MSFS would be welcome, knowing that I use a huge 4K 165Hz monitor.
😉

I don't like downgrades either.  I actually just sold my 12700k rig to go with the 5800X3D new build.  Not because I had to have the AMD.  I was having some electronical issues with the specific MB I used to have.  I just decided for me the best decision was to move on.  I didn't feel like getting new DDR5, so in my sense I was able to do a buy and sell for almost the same cost.  A wash.

If I were to upgrade my 12900KF (no plans!) I would hypothetically look at the 7800X3D which is thus far only a rumor AFAIK.

https://www.hardwaretimes.com/amd-to-announce-the-ryzen-7-7800x3d-ryzen-9-7900x3d-7950x-in-january-2023-rumor/

That'll be an expensive upgrade though as I would have to replace my current z690 motherboard. Which wasn't the cheapest one since it's watercooled in collaboration with EK.

a very convincing rumor though:

"The next major update to the family will come in the form of the X3D or 3D V-Cache parts which are mentioned but it looks like these chips might slip into early 2023 which is slightly later than what the company stated itself during their Financial Analyst Day 2022. "

AMD CPU Core Roadmap

"Starting with the CPU roadmap, AMD confirmed that its next-generation Zen lineup will feature 5nm, 4nm, and 3nm CPUs through 2022-2024. Starting right off the bat with Zen 4 which will be launching later this year on the 5nm process node, AMD will also offer Zen 4 3D V-Cache chips in 2023 on the same 5nm process node, and then Zen 4C which will utilize an optimized 4nm node, also in 2023."

"Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the best gaming processor in the market bar none. We are proud of what V-Cache technology is doing for us and we are gonna feature this in Ryzen 7000 series later this year and in the future generation."

#metoo#

the latest AMD 3D-V cache technology has me re-evaluating that habit though.

the other one to watch for in 2023 is Intel's Metro Lake, often misspelled as Meteor Lake 😊. Composed of TSMC's 5nm/6nm process node. This one could be a true challenge for AMD's 3D-V cache, not the 13900K though, the Raptor Lake's 10 nm fabrication node has reached its EOL. Intel can call it "Intel 7" as long as they want, it is still based on their outdated inefficient 10 nm process node, not 7 nm technology.

"unlike AMD's brand new Zen 4 microarchitecture that's now based on a 5nm process, Intel's Raptor Lake is “merely” another refinement of their 10nm process node, also known as Intel 7, and the performance hybrid architecture that debuted with last generation's Alder Lake chips."

Tom’s hardware shows the 5800x3D to be about 25% faster than the 13900k. There is a giant thread at the msfs forums of people upgrading to it and sharing their impressive results. The 13900k is a fine processor for a high end computer but if you want MSFS performance it’s slower.   In the MSFS forums we were positing results that are 15-25 Frames better than 12900k at busy airports.

please can you link the thread?

7900x3D looks to be ultra potent!  If I break out of Intel it will be for the 7900x3D or whatever they call this gen Vcache CPU.

This is about the 12900k vs the 13900k.

you don't have to be a fan of anything to compare options and to comment/add to Capt. Piett's assumption:

"If I were to upgrade my 12900KF (no plans!) I would hypothetically look at the 7800X3D"

I admit, the only fan I consider myself of is MSFS itself, anything else  - whatever floats my boat. now back to  topic: 12900k-vs-13900k-vs-7900x3D 😁, to give this thread any justification.

now hush, back into the pretty cockpit of yours and fly that airliner, knowing it will fly much faster come the 7900x3D.
