Intel Core i7-13700K or AMD Ryzen 7 7700X?

I will soon go for a full CPU/MB/RAM upgrade and I can't decide if I go Intel or AMD. So here's a poll to help me decide.

I would say Ryzen 7 7700X because it's the beginning of a new platform that will last years. You'll be able to upgrade again in the future by only BIOS update and a new CPU.
The Intel i7 13700K is a great chip as well, but when it's time to upgrade again you will need a new motherboard.

I guess it really depends whether the OP expects to be updating their build sometime within the next three years or so. (AMD has promised socket support to "2025 or beyond.")  If their intent is to "build something and leave it untouched for the next seven years," then the Intel chip seems to be superior to the current mid-range AMD chips.  But I'm in a similar boat; I am planning a new build and, even if the i7-13700K is better at MSFS (and the various creative apps on which I depend), I'm still planning to go with a 7700 because I expect that I'll be upgrading to a higher-end AMD chip (possibly one with 3D memory) sometime between now and 2025.

Absolutely concur with that.
It boils down to how long one plans to keep the setup, or even if upgrading the entire system isn't a bother but fun.

Probably because there are many new people.  Sometimes I don't even read the sticky threads.

That's very helpful. I am exactly in that situation now: I have an i9 9820X and can't upgrade much beyond what I have with the current motherboard.

To answer your question, I see myself upgrading every three years or so. I would have preferred to just drop in a newer CPU at this point, but my motherboard will only support up to 10th generation Intel, which means a single-core performance upgrade of only 5% or so for me.

i just bit the bullet and got a 7950x, purely for the fact the next few chipsets released based on history with AMD board will be supported

as Ive been an intel guy for the past 10yrs, my only gripe was new boards every time i got a new chip

as i use both msfs and p3d on paper the amd seems to produce better results, I will have to wait and see later this month when it arrives and im set up

The path I chose a few year ago was X570, started off with an 3800X and ended up with a 5800X3D which is an excellent CPU and will last me another couple of years at the minimum, it's the upgrade path that's the key here IMO.

Every platform lasts for a couple of years and then a new platform will come.

Only when a new platform has been announced to come within 6 months I look at that.

A year ago I chose for S1700 and a 12900k. A few weeks ago I replaced that cpu for a 13900kf.

Does anyone know what the MSFS percentage performance difference is between the 7700x and the 13700k? Also it would be very good to know that difference in 4K and not only HD.

I think that information is more important or as important as talking about upgrade paths that may never happen or be worth it. If it is only a small percentage difference you could argue in favour of AMD to have the upgrade path but if it is more than 10% peformance difference I'd question the logic of going AMD.

Same here. Started with an R9 3900X on X570, later upgraded to the R9 5900X, and now I'm considering swapping it for a 5800X3D because of the insane game performance.

Don't take it too badly.  Some people are more tolerant. 
I am guessing you meant which upgrade would be the best for performance in MSFS?  In which case it is not a pure hardware question and it is relevant to the forum as far as I can see.

I never view the hardware forum so I would never see these kind of answers relevant to MSFS performance if it wasn't for threads like this.  And I have learnt a lot recently.
To future proof, I would go with the AMD chips as the X3D chips in particular show massive performance gains in MSFS, which seems to respond to the extra cache on these chips really well.

Personally, I have just gone from a 12900K to a 13900KF, and I am seeing gains better than expected. 
Without overclocking, and with my 3080Ti, I am holding 60fps in general, which I couldn't before. (4K ultra settings, DLSS balanced mode),  
Something like a complex airliner over complex scenery dips to 50-55fps though.  I am hoping freesync will help with that when I get it working properly again (my settings are out somewhere).

Just a footnote: Obviously I could upgrade easily to the 13900, as I keep the same motherboard and RAM. 
Next year I will look at an AMD 7 series X3D, but with this comes the cost of a new motherboard and RAM - not cheap!
The aim is to hold 60fps in all circumstances at 4k decent settings.  My 1080Ti is only hitting about 80% at the moment, so CPU main thread is the limiting factor currently, but much better with the 13900, as it tops out at 100% on the main thread(s) much less often.
