November 17, 20223 yr My Community folder stands at 139 Gb. Loads of space on the drive, and no troublesome add-ons. In fact, the only add-on that ever caused a problem was a repaint for the JPLogistics C152 mod. Everything is running sweetly, so what advantage would I gain from Add-On Linker ? Are there any additional functions that I'm not aware of ? Surely not everybody was kung fu fighting. https://rationalwiki.org

First time I wore it, I went to see the Hawaiian Tropic Bikini Team and the minute they saw that shirt, they started chasing me down the street. They caught up with me an tore it right off my back. I'd tell you the rest, but this is a family forum. So just don't bother messing with the linker unless you want to get attacked by a rabid pack of beautiful women. November 17, 20223 yr I'm not lean anymore so why should I care about my community folder? I just start up msfs and then walk away to do something else while it starts up. This way not only do I not worry about my community folder but also get some chores done! And yes, I'm using add-on linker. LouP

Are there any additional functions that I'm not aware of ? Addon Linker has nothing to do with performance. Its advantages are (a) never having to move files in and out of Community, and (b) having all your addons stored outside MSFS and organizing them in a coherent way. If you don't need it, fine. But the time may come when you might want to check it out, especially if your addon collection becomes ridiculously large, as mine is (600 GB)! There are some functions that you might not be aware of, such as detecting duplicate and/or conflicting files, etc. It is a very clever, well-designed tool. Edited November 17, 20223 yr by cobalt
November 17, 20223 yr What difference does it make if you store them in the Community folder or another folder? You still have to keep them somewhere. As someone said, it provides a solution to a problem which never existed. 9950X3D - X870E Aorus Master- TUF 5090 OC - 64GB DDR5 - 1500W HXi - Titan 360 RX LCD - 9100 Pro x 2 - LG 45GX950A - HOTAS Warthog with Ava Base

Keeping Community empty has multiple advantages in avoiding conflicts (as with updates); making it easier to select specific addons for use in a particular flying session; and freeing up that space on your MSFS drive, assuming your addons are stored on a different drive. Cellphones are also a solution to a nonexistent problem, but I will bet you have one! Edited November 17, 20223 yr by cobalt

Never had a conflict. November 17, 20223 yr The discussion is pointless. For those that see no value in the Addons Linker, carry on not using it. For those that see value in the Addons Linker, carry on using it. There is no point whatever in trying to convince either point of view held that the other one is wrong. However, it seems to be an irresistible temptation in (flight simulation) discussions to try to convince all others that there is only one correct view. My father (RIP) was always right and once you understood that, he was much easier to get on with.
November 17, 20223 yr Couldn't live without Addon Linker now. imo it's the most essential app for MSFS. The ModelLib and MaterialLib changers have proved invaluable in preventing conflicts and CDT's, The autostart feature save me from having to load the 6 external apps I have running with MSFS individually. The ability to find duplicates is very handy when you have a massive amount of addons. And obviously as someone with the game and addons on three separate drives it makes life super simple to organise everything. It also makes troubleshooting issues with addons SO much easier. I'd go so far as to say without it I wouldn't even bother with the sim. The thought of having to manage the community folder without it would drive me even more nuts than i already am.

Copy & pasting (then deleting again) potentially GBs of data to a drive versus ticking a box or two in AddonsLinker (which merely writes tiny links to the Community folder)? One requires dozens, if not hundreds or thousands of often large files to be written to the Community Folder's drive every time, the other needs a comparative handful of tiny files (the links). Using AddonsLinker, if I activate every add-on I have, it 'copies' 2403 add-ons into Community in an instant. (No, I don't activate everything normally of course - it's just for reference). Even with write cycles supposedly being less of an issue than they were with older SSDs, that's got to be a good thing, and so much quicker. I know which I prefer. But... you do what you and I'll do what I do. It's all good.
