CTD

Featured Replies

After the last update I'm getting CTD on just about every flight after 15-30 minutes. I uninstalled and reinstalled msfs and problem remains.

Anyone else here experiencing the same?

Doubtful anything to do specifically with MSFS since you reinstalled.  Have to look at all the myriad potential sources thru process of elimination:  empty out the comm folder for now and restest, look CPU/GPU temps, etc, etc etc and....GOOD LUCK!  Dang hassle when it strikes!

Guess i will be waiting for the next update. I am starting to spend more time screwing with this sim than flying.

I’m getting more than I used to. I was on DX12 and since reverting to DX11 it’s not CTD but still getting bit stutters here and there (mainly peripheral related it seems))

Nasty place to be I agree and was there recently.  My tale of woe began about 2.5months ago.  It began as generally not the smoothest performance the machine had produced previously.  After some basic stuff to try I ended up reinstalling Win 10 and MSFS, after which a recurrent hard pause of brief duration began happening 😕  That turned out to be a nothing burger thankfully.  But the next few weeks took me on a quest for absolute perfection, and I actually got there:

Yeah, the overwhelming majority of CTD's or Performance loss are:

1: Scenery addons and incompatibility with other ones (or not updated)

2: USB/peripheral/Bluetooth Headphones getting disconnected or turning "off" (see device manager)

3. Overheating/throttling of CPU/GPU

4: Memory issues

Most of mine were from scenery addons. Payware or freeware it doesn't matter.

I use addon linker and take out all addons, reset my nvidia control panel (I turn on Gsync or High Performance), make sure all windows and gpu drivers are up to date. Delete all content from the marketplace. All of it. Usually that stops the performance and CTD's. So much of the advice is snake oil.

Noel above has done quite a bit helping people pin-point some issues.

One thing I learned in over three decades of simming, is to avoid the latest drivers at all costs, unless I am having issues with my present driver.

Don't mix performance issues and CTDs. These are two different pair of shoes. CTDs are mostly caused by errors in a program or - in rare cases - a faulty hardware. Performance issues can have thousands of causes.

As for your CTDs the first thing to check is addons, especially scenery addons. You - well anyone - should use Addon Linker to only use the scenery needed for a flight, this drastically reduces CTDs due to scenery conflicts. Also Addon Linker can automatically check and rename modellib.bgl files if they conflict over multiple addons (a frequent cause of CTDs).

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

This. All of this. Don't forget, even payware can cause conflicts. Even Asobo objects caused this in the past. Certain world update objects and photogrammy conflicted with each other causing fps loss in the past.

For me, it was a Dubai airport addon. I have the ORBX landmarks for Dubai without any issues but it seems as I left the Dubai airspace and started entering Iran, I would get CTD's. Tried several times. I used addon linker and removed Dubai airport (the addon, not the default scenery) and I've been in the air towards UKOO for a few hours now.

I use a memory leak app that automatically helps with memory issues. It could be snake oil but so far it has helped.

I have installed the one (from a few days ago) just now and have had no problems with it.

I think most of these issues are not related to drivers or hardware but more like scenery or other addons.

I'm probably wrong.

Hello Noel

I also just did a fresh install of Windows and MSFS after a new motherboard and CPU upgrade.  I am also getting these hard pause of brief duration with every flight. Did you find out what was causing it?  Not sure what you mean by "nothing burger"

To the OP.  There are many things that could cause CTD, Unstable CPU clocks and Ram are one of the biggest culprits. Are you running your memory in XMP mode? If so, try and disable it, and see if you still have CTD.  In my case, this what was causing my CTD after a new upgrade to my CPU and RAM.  About 5-15 min of running MSFS I would get a CTD.  XMP mode, in my case, was not stable enough.

My fresh install was of Windows 10, FWIW.  Its desktop background image defaulted to change every 1 minute, and with each I would get a brief but significant pause.  So changed it to once daily and all's well with that piece.
