Reducing VRAM

Featured Replies

Hey y'all,

Anyone have any recommendations for lowering some settings to reduce VRAM but have the smallest impact on visual fidelity?

Or put another way, are there some settings that at ULTRA use a lot of VRAM and I wouldn't notice much if I dropped down?

Thanks.

What are your system specs?

I turn off grass and bushes unless I'm flying in summertime and using a lot of turf/grass strips.

Clouds have a really hard hit on GPU and CPU...  I'll set them to high when I'm in VR.  High looks just a little worse than ultra.  Don't go medium though it looks awful... blurry blobs.

I've hard AO Ambient Occlusion is tough on gpu but I'm not certain.  I run at ultra when in 1440p /2D.  I also have a 12700K with rtx 4080 though.

Thanks for these.

I have 5800X3D but only a 3070. Fine for anything GA, but ULTRA in heavy 3rd party airports just destroys my 3070 with inly 8GB RAM. I need a new GPU really.

That's still a beefy system.  Running DX12 will murder your vram.  It's better in 11.  What resolution are you running?

VRAM usage is way less in DX11 than 12 if thats what you are using. Thats one way to help.

Yeah still DX11, DX12 is a no-go with only 8GB. 1440p.

Hmmm I had a 1080 Ti with 11GB and it was fine in 11.  But 12 was rough.  Obviously the 4080 is now fine in 2d but it takes a beating in VR hehe.  I also run 1440p.

If your system starts chugging try reducing terrain level of detail.     You might find better overall performance in DX11 as well.

Why do you want to lower VRAM usage?
It's a good thing that MSFS actually uses up your VRAM. It just shows it's taking advantage of your resources.

I also max out VRAM usage at 16 GB. The only GPU that might have some headroom would be 3090/ti and 4090.

Because my 3070 only has 8GB and when it goes over the FPS tanks.

I don't know what your gpu budget is, but the 4070ti is out now, and it has 12GB vram.

Also the 4080's have 16gb, and 4090 24gb.

I think for 1440p the "present" optimal is 16 GB especially when wanting to run DX12. I wouldn't bother with the 4070ti unless youre in an absolute pinch and you may end up worrying about the same thing down the road.

DX12?

It shouldn't, but I believe you. Hope you figure it out.

My 3060TI has 8gig VRAM that run about 70% with FPS in the 70s.

Note that I stay away from busy airports.
