April 6, 20233 yr Hi folks. First let me tell you I am using the latest Nvidia driver with a 3090. I am noticing that with a place just sitting on the runway waiting for me to do something, the GPU usage is jumping all over the place, from numbers in the 50's and 60's to numbers from 90-100. I don't know what could be happening that keeps spiking the GPU to 90-100% when the place is just sitting on the runway doing nothing. Can someone possibly help me out with this and make some suggestions, theories, etc? Thanks. April 6, 20233 yr Re-install an older nVidia driver before you dig too far into your "new driver", there are just a lot of discussions over the last two driver versions. You can check out some video card forums. Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700F CPU @ 2.90GHz (8 cores) Hyper on, Evga RTX 3060 12 Gig, 32 GB ram, Windows 11, P3D v6, and MSFS 2020 and a couple of SSD's
April 6, 20233 yr My first actions would bet o try limiting framerates and then try an older driver as stated above. other than that, I'm not sure what else you can do. Just a further thought - Is this happening at all airports or just addon airports? It could be that an addon is causing the issue and in that case, you can probably only reduce your settings if the other two options don't help. Good luck. April 6, 20233 yr Author OK, some responses: 1. I am doing the testing with no addons whatsoever. 2. I have downgraded the NVIDIA driver 4 versions and still the same thing 3. This has nothing to do with airports. This is happening while setting on the SIM home screen. GPU usage juming back and forth randomly from the 50's to 100 This problem may not be new for me. I have been struggling for ages trying to get a decent running SIM to use with my Quest 2, even though I have reasonably powerful hardware resources. The only reason I picked up on this was that I was following a video describing ways to bring down your GPU usage while using the sim, to allow for some headroom, and when I started watching the GPU usage, while doing the recommended changes, the responses I was getting in GPU usage were nothing like those being demonstrated in the video. In the video, when a change would be made, the GPU usage would level off at a different level within a few seconds. With my system, even when doing nothing in the SIM (i.e. home screen), the SIM is still causing the GPU to jump all over the place. And I do know it's the SIM because I am only monitoring flightsim.exe. April 7, 20233 yr Author This is really bugging me. I have tried many things to no avail. The sim sits on the screen waiting for me to click the FLY button and Windows indicates the sim is using 92% of the GPU, essentially doing nothing. I cannot figure out why that is. Any more advice of how to troubleshoot this? April 7, 20233 yr Aircraft? Airport? Weather? How are you measuring GPU utilization? BTW, I'm seeing that my GPU utilization varies more widely on the Windows Process Monitor than it does on the GeForce Experience performance overlay and the ranges don't agree either. I have no idea which one is correct. Also, the GPU usage seems to increase when I unlock the frames and fps increases from 30 to the mid 30s, but only on the GeForce Experience overlay, not the Windows PM. Observations made in a 737 at KSEA on a cloudy day. No AI. Good luck. BTW, how does the sim fly? April 7, 20233 yr Author My testing is all without even flying. Just sitting on a screen waiting to fly, that's what I found so troubling. However, I think I found the cause, although I don't really know what it means. I did a large Windows 11 Insider Program update recently and I just noticed that HAGS, Variable Refresh Rate, and Windows Optimizations were all turned back on. I turned all three of those things off, rebooted the PC, and tried the whole process again. Now the GPU looks almost idle when MSFS look almost idle, as I would expect. I don't know what those options do that causes those readings for the GPU but it all seems as expected now with them turned off. April 7, 20233 yr Be careful out there , I've just spent 4 hrs trying to rectify a GPU cooler ( addon ready for the summer ) that was screaming llike a banshee at 100% after installing some fan control software that i didn't really understand , my missus in the next thought I was watching top gun as my weighty PC was almost airborne with this thing , in fact I had to put my headphones on as it was giving me a headache as I grappled with the noise , all fixed now and its pretty good actually . lol ROG Crossair Hero X670e , 9900X, TUF 4090 , X4 NVME's. April 7, 20233 yr You are saying - with those turned off, MSFS runs as you would expect?
