April 23, 20233 yr Although in the long past I've done a few flight that I would consider "long" (California to Hawaii; NY - London), I've never really been a fan of long IFR flights as it suits no purpose for me to sit for hours doing next to nothing. These days I mostly fly by hand, without any a/p engagement so my flights are usually less than 200nm. Dave Kalin Excel Classes Computer Lessons

April 23, 20233 yr Longest I do are like KORD KSFO or KORD KSEA now a days. I miss the skew/speedup functionality that Prepar3d had. Edited April 23, 20233 yr by Harold_Finch I9 12900K @5.2Ghz 64 GB DDR4, RTX 4090, Win 11 Pro, 15 TB on 5 SSD's

If you goeing to work you have to do it for hours, thats what i do "work for hours". For me, this is the essential reason why I do flight simulations in the first place 🙂 cheers 😉 08.2024 new PC is online : ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-F GAMING WIFI Mainboard, AMD Ryzen™ 9 7950X3D Prozessor, G.Skill DIMM 64 GB DDR5-6000 (2x 32 GB) Dual-Kit, MSI GeForce RTX 4090 VENTUS 3X E 24G OC Grafikkarte, 2x WD Black SN850X NVMe SSD 4 TB - Drive C+D, WD Gold Enterprise Class 12 TB for storage HDD, Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 1000W PC - Power supply, Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO CPU Aircooler with 7 Heatpipes, Design Meshify 2 White TG Clear Tint Tower-Case, 3x 4K monitors 2x32 Samsung 1x27 LG 3840x2160, Windows11 Prof. 23H2 - now Windows11 Prof. 25H2 Flightsimulator Hardware: Honeycomb Throttle Bravo, Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, Logitech Flight Joke System, XBox Controller, some Thrustmaster stuff, Winwing CDU Panels.
April 23, 20233 yr I'm just in the middle of Hilo to Newark right now in the BBJ. I can't remember the actual longest, but have been doing a few 10-12 hour flights in the BBJ over the past weeks. I'm still occasionally switching back to FSX SE longhauls in the 747, 777, and DC8. Although at this point I seem to have found a sweet spot in MSFS. It's running very well. Excellent scenery on takeoffs and landings, and even up at FL410 it looks great. The only thing that still bothers me is a slight whine of the computer fans. It's not nearly as bad as when I first started out in MSFS, but noticeably louder than when I'm running FSX in the background and doing other work on the computer. It would be cool if there were an option to minimize graphics settings without restarting the sim when you minimize the window. I wouldn't mind like a 30 second lag to get back up to speeed when you pop back into your cockpit. When I fire up the good ol' QOTS in FSX I still very much enjoy all the flight planning, preflights, the whole experience. Especially the blisfull silence when I'm doing other stuff. But I can't help it, I also get that itch to have a long haul flight running in the background and checking in from time to time. The AI traffic I have in FSX is at least as fun to watch as in MSFS. But the overall graphics, also walking around the ramp, of course choose MSFS! I maybe won't get the same aircraft I already have in FSX when they come out in MSFS, but rather add new ones, A330, maybe 787, or A350, or hopefully a good classic like the DC10. I actually enjoy short to medium hauls in the 737-700 since I got MSFS now too.
April 23, 20233 yr 1 hour and most of it was @ 4x speed 🙂 SAR Pilot. Flight Sim'ing since the beginning.
April 23, 20233 yr Whenever I can I have a flight running. I enjoy long hauls while doing something else (like working). Planning my step climbs, monitoring fuel consumption, occasionally resolving a random failure. And whenever I want just to focus on the sim then I choose a shorter route. Both are nice 🙂

April 24, 20233 yr 9 hrs in the Salty747 the other day. I let it run at Simrate1. Went well, pretty smooth. The Salty mod is getting better and better. I wouldn't mind like a 30 second lag to get back up to speeed when you pop back into your cockpit. If you've got an Nvidia graphics card, you can use the Nvidia Control Panel app to limit MSFS' max frame rate while it's not the app in focus. I've got this set up to max out at 20fps when it's running in the background. That saves me a fair few Watts (and a big drop in fan noise) on those long hauls...
April 24, 20233 yr Thanks! I'm using AMD, but frame rates are certainly a good thing to try. I'm using the Riva Statistics Tuner for that. Also just tried again at least quickly lowering the sliders to minimum settings in the general options, like the level of detail. Anytime before leaving the cockpit, and boosting them back up when I check back in. Not too much effort, and no need to restart the sim for that to take effect. Brings temps down a bit further. I did Tangier Morocco to Whangarei New Zealand once in the 777-200LR with full fuel and aux tanks and close to zero payload, but that was in FSX. According to Wikipedia it doesn't really get any further than that unless you go more than halfway around the World. The distance alone isn't necessarily so much of interest to me, but planning a route from scratch not using Simbrief, just Aviaton Weather wind forecast charts and Skyvector and seeing how the fuel and time work out according to plan. Maybe comparing it with a real world flight.
