Persistant Stutter

Featured Replies

It may also be something that hooks into the sim through Simconnect. With the new ATR there was like a heartbeat stutter when panning the view or when a AI plane flew by. Eventually I found it was the HTC voicepack plugin in VoiceAttack that caused it.

This is usually a result of something running in the background, typically a virus checker or anti malware application.

Have you excluded your flight simulator folder/drive from these?

You could just turn off any antivirus or anti malware programs you are using temporarily just to test.

Absolutely--with a fixed interval stutter it's going to be something in that domain.  Steam, Win 10's desktop image automatic change interval which got me with a stutter every 60 or so seconds until I identified it, or something else polling your machine.  Ultra doubtful anything to do w/ drivers, MSFS, GF Experience, etc.  Look also at any changes to the system preceding it, and if you possibly can do a system restore from prior to onset of this annoyance that may cure whatever the culprit is.

I have been getting this for some time. it is related to the avionics. if you switch the avionics off you will see the spikes disappear.

I am using the C414 with the TDS GTN750. I'll try with the GNS 530 and see how it goes. And  i've made every exclusion possible.

In your case that may indeed be true... but you cannot assume that applies here as well.. 😉

Bert

I have tried with the GNS 530 and there are no spikes.

Thanks Bert. It is indeed true in my case. I never said it applies to everyone. I'm trying to help the poster out, as I have a similar problem. Geeez..!

Regular interval stutters? Anti-virus or windows defender. Exclude the MSFS folders (all of them, community older, offical folder, app data folder etc.) and see if it stops.

Hi Guys, It's taken me while but I think I have got through all of your suggestions;

Thanks for the suggestion @Fiorentoni but having excluded all MS folders, and in fact the complete appdata folder plus the game folder on my other drive that holds the community folder (which is empty at the moment) there was no difference and rougly 3 second spiking and associated frame drops continued.

Hi @cianpars. I tried your suggestion of turning off Windows Defender completely (I don't have any other AV) but as with the exclusions, this made no difference.

No. No, Mav, this is not a good idea.

If you have Nvidia Reflex enabled in game, turn it off, also turn it off in NCP and see if that makes any difference, I noticed my mainthread times were a lot higher with it on (I get that its designed to be just in time but seems pointless from my experience)

Thanks @Brocky120 . Turned off low latency in MSFS and in NCP but unfortunately this did not stop the spiking.

Thanks @Noel.  Yes I think "something else polling my machine" is probably a good way to describe this. I haven't conducted a system restore and to be honest I have no idea how long this has been going on because I had everything on Ultra with a lot of AI and was experiencing PIS (Pilot Induced Stutters 😬) anyway.  These persistent ones could have been hiding in there for quite a while.

Thanks for the suggestion @petejohno1.  I tried that but to no avail. But interestingly,  as I exited the flight mode from this test, and went back to the main menu I noticed the spiking was still continuing. Hadn't noticed that before and thought this was only occurring in a loaded flight!

What does LatencyMon say?

Well @Waldo Pepper this could be a bit of a dark horse. You can see from everyone's suggestions above that none of the usual culprits seem to be at play here. I have also reconfigured my 40Gps HDMI cable where the arrows were back to front and really felt I was going to get a Eureka moment from that  little discovery, but no.

Your suggestion to see what LatencyMon had to say had me a bit perplexed because I have no idea what it does and it seems to be biased to audio output rather than the video where my problem seems to lie. Furthermore, I really didn't know what I was looking at I mean I could see CPU thread latency across the 16 cores but what does that mean? I couldn't  see any rapid changes in those numbers with the video stutter. In fact, the real discovery here was that I couldn't see a video stutter at all when LatencyMon was running.! 😕 Yep that's right, when LatencyMon was running micro stutters were gone. Turn it off and they're back!.

You have some explaining to do Waldo 😃.

Cheers

Do you have Realtek Audio drivers installed?  These caused nothing but issues for me in stability and performance, of course YYMV....

What does the task manager say? Any processes running that you wouldn't know of?

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

FWIW, during my optimizations done 12/22 I learned, at least in this Win 10 box, Windows Realtime Protection, Defender, NV Low Latency, Geforce Experience Filters and other features, Windows Game Mode, created no problems whatsoever w/ stutters or in any way reduced ultra smooth animation, described here:

Windows used a deferred procedural call system which allows the os scheduler to give time sensitive workloads a higher priority.

The cpu or gpu performs it's calculations in batches,  and then the OS can either choose to interrupt the system bus immediatel and transfer that data set with immediate priority,   or it can choose to place that data in a buffer and transfer it in a more convenient time.     This allows the system to give more immediate access and more bus time to high priority tasks like graphics and audio,   and provide less resources to background tasks.

A poorly written driver or process,  a bad driver installation, or missing driver,   can cause high interrupt latency or severe lag spikes.

I use Latencymon to check system latency,  and figure out what might be causing it.   Often you can track it down to which driver or process is offending.

Look for drivers or processes with high execution times,   look for page faults, etc.

Page faults occur when the CPU needs to process data which isn't resident in the system memory,  and has to receive it from a hard drive across the system bus.   This can also cause massive lag spike as the CPU and GPU wait around.

https://www.resplendence.com/latencymon_using

If the symptoms disappear when latmon is running,   I'd start to think about cpu power management issue like a bad chipset driver install.

Also seeing this with newly built 7950x3d 3080ti.

Everything  stock atm. Ai off also

cl30 6000 expo off until bios out of beta .

same settings as before update.

there is a thread on msfs about it also.
