Jorg says Asobo team for MSFS grew from 100 to 175 people

Featured Replies

So Jorg mentioned something interesting at the Flight Sim Expo just a few moments ago. He said Asobo has grown from 100 people to 175 people since MSFS started, and he mentions it's because "flight sim is such a big hit": https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1854043895?t=00h04m44s. Because Jorg is referring to how well flight sim was such a big hit, I assume the photo and the growth of 100 people to 175 people must be referring to the team size for MSFS, and not the number of total employees at Asobo because of course, Asobo has other products and other projects not related to MSFS.

I had always expected the MSFS team to shrink over time, because that's typically the pattern for most video games - peak user number for a video game is shortly after its release, and the user base dwindles after. The fact that the MSFS team has grown over this period is counter to what I predicted.  But Microsoft must be seeing a lot of good money coming in from MSFS if they are growing the team over the last few years, rather than shrinking the team.

That's great news thanks!  Something that distinguishes flight sims from other genres is how differently people can and do use the sim.  And I think people who use fight sims often use them for decades, versus for a few 100 hours then park the title which is my history with a few games.

I think MSFS is going to be much more than a Flight Simulator. It can be a watercraft simulator, a car simulator, a city simulator, an underwater simulator, a World simulator. Even an Other World simulator (Dune Mod).  10 years seems like only a start, and we’ve gone a heck of a long way already.

Definitely. I am pretty sure Microsoft will use the MSFS engine for other applications, including everything you mentioned. Jorg just mentioned how they are using machine learning to improve the terrain in his presentation today. Microsoft is trying to replicate the entire earth in high fidelity and high accuracy and they are getting better and better at it as time progresses.

I missed that part. Do you have a source for that? Or are you being sarcastic 🤣

No, that was the quote during their 2024 bit. Given all what they are doing for 2024, not surprised. MS's commitment and investment into the franchise is very very clear now, and are likely also building a base world/physics simulator platform and technology stack for various applications and entertainment.  Can't wait for 2024 and beyond!

Ahh, a link for this about the 500 employees would be awesome, if anybody has a direct link for it. But yes, I was always assuming they are going to turn the MSFS engine into a world engine, for use for other applications, such as train simulator, truck simulator, and even more.  If they can get the world in very high fidelity, every game company where their game takes place in the modern day and where their game requires modern day scenery, is going to be knocking on Microsoft's door to use their engine.

"Biggest sim ever made, it has over 500 people on it"

I think the 175 number is for MSFS 2020 maybe, i.e. Asobo as it was during the 2020 prime years. And these numbers probably include partner teams.

Okay, that's very interesting. I do think they have future plans for the MSFS engine then, with 500 people working on it. I am growing more and more confident that Microsoft wants to use this engine for other applications, other than flight simulation.

Yeah, he’s talking about everyone involved on the Sim. Like the working title guys, they are not from Asobo, but they’ve are working on the sim.

Definitely. Microsoft wouldn’t put this much people just for a Flight Simulator. Also, there’s a lot of potential to be explored in there.

I’ve seen potential for a Truck Simulator, ship simulator, train simulator etc. Since the early days of the 2020 alpha times.
