Need quick help in Alaska

Featured Replies

Have some friends coming over today that are totally not into simming and asked me to show them something cool. Thinking Alaska. Any quick tips for an airstrip close to Denali, then do a few turns around the park and land somewhere cool by the river, surrounded by the mountains? Never did any bush flying, so I’m clueless in the region.

Talkeetna is a pretty good jump off point.  If you’re not familiar with skyvector I’d suggest taking a look as it will show you all the little airstrips near Denali.

They’re local to Denver. We ended up taking off from PATK and headed around Denali and back. They were already getting bored and asking me to do stupid stuff in the air. Sigh.

Oh that's too bad, I have people like that too.  Sometimes if you let them fly, they don't get bored.  By "fly" I don't necessarily mean op the yoke and pedals, I mean for example have them set the autopilot up, instructing them as to how it works...or let them set the altimeter and tell them why/when you do that.  Or just let them operate the views or drone out of the windows.   With some of them it might spark the gears and they may eventually get it and not feel a need to do stupid stuff.

But I definitely know what you're talking about.  I think we're about .00000001% of the population.

I come a  little late. Anyway,  I like the Copper River Valley from Mc Carthy to Chitina or even to Valdez. The Fjords from Juneau to Haines to  Skagway are lovely too. Spectacular landing in Skagway.

LOL this is the truth isn't it.  Simmers are an odd lot most folks cannot relate at all to, at least the fascination with simming.

My kids and wife don't understand either. My wife wanted to see what I was doing, what I was wasting all this money and time on.  I set up a flight from Tucson to LA but after a while she stopped me and said how do you find this entertaining, it seems like work. It looks like it requires to much brain power to be enjoyable.

I couldn't come up with an answer that made sense to her.

My kids were never intrested either. "Do a barrel roll, does it blow up if you crash"?  "This is boring."

This from the kids who play Terarria and Magic the Gathering mobile and the woman who plays Eggs Inc. and Sims4.

You like what you like...

I often say to my wife “can I show you something in flight simulator and you pretend to be impressed?” 😂

She’s a good sport most of the time.  She doesn’t get it, but she’s happy that I’m happy and that’s mostly all I can ask for.

It’s better than the time I showed her something I’m sure was horrific in GTA V that I found hilarious and she said “next time you want to show me something funny in this game…maybe don’t” 😂

It's just the way it is,  man.   I've probably posted over a dozen glider community flights here,   and as far as I can tell nobody from here has ever participated.  Not once.  You can lead a horse to water,  but you cannot make one drink.

Unpowered group flights are one of the most intense activities you can participate in.   Every split second is a new wager against yourself,   let alone the other 30+ pilots.   But people are just not interested.   Not criticizing,  you understand.   To each his own,  but sometimes I think that people don't know what they are missing.

About the only replies I ever get is people who point out whatever MSFS does wrong,  but they never join a group flight to see what it get's right.   Reminds me of being a kid when I attended Catholic school and wouldn't eat peas.  The Mother Superior called my mother, and she had to come to school.   My mom ended up making me eat the peas,  at least one spoonful she said.   That was the day I discovered that I actually loved peas.

Interesting post 😃 because I read your notices but never went and see.

Gliding has never caught a large audience in any of MSFS predecessors or competitors that I know. The reputation is that flightsims are not very good at simulating gliding. I should try a spoon a peas though, to check by myself.

Then  group flights need a strong internet connection I suppose, to cope with 30 simcraft close to you ?
