Hi all. Not sure if it is okay ask here but which would give MSFS better performance, a 3080 Ti or RTX 4070 Overclock 12GB?

Robin

It's ok to ask here.

4070.

Frame Generation

Agree.  I went from a 3080 to 4070, which is a sideways move in FPS terms.........until you turn on frame generation and its a game changer.

I am looking at one online right now. Did you have to upgrade your power supply?

Maybe you should have given this rather important info earlier... in VR, you will NOT be able to use frame generation. So for VR only, you will «only» profit from the probably very slight increase in performance of a 4070ti vs a 3080, if at all (due to CPU limit...).

Gone from a RTX 3080 40 fps (average ) to a RTX 4070TI to 130 plus FPS with FG and super smooth difference night and day...

Running 2K and a GSYNC HDR monitor 😎

Im in the same boat,  Overall Im very happy w my 3080 but would consider an upgrade. I always wondered w frame gen whats the difference between the 4070/4080/4090? If Im getting over 100 FPS whats the point in spending double for the 4090? Of course without frame gen you will see a much bigger gap in performance but does anyone NOT use frame gen w the 4000 series ?

According to Toms Hardware (https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html) under "GPU Benchmarks Hierarchy — 4K Ultra" for FLight Simulator in DX11, the 4070 renders at 43.3 fps, whilst the 3080 Ti at 57.4 fps.  That's quite a difference!  With frame generation, as has been stated, the 4070's rate will pretty near double, but not in VR.  It's anybody's guess whether frame generation (DLSS 3) for VR will be supported in the future.

You need to specify your MB/CPU as well. Running 4080 on something, such as 10900k, might not help.

I have the 4070 and can say I have great results with Frame generation!

As stated above, presently, DLSS 3 isn't supported for VR...this is important to note in your deliberations

Yes - I'm exclusively VR too.  And I've recently upgraded from a 3080Ti to a 4080 after previously upping my CPU from a Ryzen 7 5800X to Ryzen 7 7700x (which needed an upgrade also of motherboard).

I ran the 7700x for a reasonable amount of time with the 3080Ti before going through the same thought-process/logic/gamble of shelling out for a 4080.  Also, I have just built my brother-in-law a games computer with my cast-off 5800x CPU and 3080Ti, including the similarly retired Reverb Gen 1.  He's loaded MSFS and so yes, I can probably give you a view as I am able to make pretty direct comparisons.

And, of course, it is all pennies on the scale.  That is, the iterative/affordable improvements are almost always relatively small - and I share what I think is a common experience that there are no golden bullets that change your simming life!

So - for what it's worth, my personal view:

As said above, this stuff is all iterative - the CPU capability affects the GPU capability affects the CPU capbility

The 3080Ti is a simply splendid GPU and can give very decent results with, say, the HP Reverb G2

The 4080 has given me the ability to tweak further stuff - to get tangibly better resolution (with upscaling the render level) at equal smoothness and modest impact on fps.

When I compare my b-i-law's set up with mine - yes, there's a difference.  Do I prefer the 4080?  Yes.  But would I be content to use my b-i-law's rig if mine blew a fuse?  Actually yes.  It's still beyond what I thought possible only a few years ago.

If I already owned a 3080Ti - would I upgrade to a 4070?  No.  Not worth it.

If I had neither card or equivalent, would I go for a 4070 over a 3080Ti?  Yes - it is worth the difference in cost for the future-proofing and cooler running

Should I have gone the extra mile for a 4090 over the 4080?  No - the 4090's are still massively expensive in comparison.

Hope this helps

Argh.  So remove my reference to Frame Gen earlier.  Still, it's possible in the future we'll get FG in VR.  And I can speak as a 3080ti owner (on my old sim machine) that the 4-series do indeed run much cooler and in my opinion are just simply better technology.  If buying now and the choice was between a 3080ti and a 4070ti, even if VR only I'd still go 4070ti.

Nothing wrong with a 3080ti (mine served me well) other than it's yesterday's tech and it runs hot.  Ask me how I know.  😄

Anyway I'm far from a VR expert but there is a VR-dedicated subforum here...you may run your question by the kindly people in there, too.

n terms of old vs new tech the 4070TI is more or less in the same ball park as the RTX3090.

So maybe a better comparison is 4070ti vs 2nd hand 3090 .
