Slew (Y) is such a problem

Featured Replies

Why is slewing an aircraft in MSFS such an issue? In P3D it was easy.

Now in MSFS, I can't really get the aircracft in the position I want as each tap of the keypad sends it hundreds of meters in that direction. But to top itoff, when I press Y to release it from slew mode it sends the aircraft into orbit!!!!

So annoying and ANOTHER thing that P3D got so right yet MSFS has failed to sort out.

I share your sentiments, man. It would've been much more intuitive for them to bring back the exact keyboard bindings for slew in MSFS that most of us were used to in ESP flight sims.

Actually slewing in MSFS enables much finer and precise control than FSX or PM3D. It's just that by default, MSFS is set up wrong. Set up more sensibly by the player in MSFS Controls window, will end forever any hundreds of meters with each touch. I can move it 3 inches with each touch. Translate up, down, forward, back, translate left and right, yaw left and right, and roll left and right.

It probably took me 10 minutes to set it up. The idea is stop using the keyboard keys for slew movements. Instead map all slew movements to the controllers instead of using keyboard keys. Because keyboard keys are not proportional, but controller axis are proportional.

If I move the stick or yoke wheel very slightly left or right, then the plane will move very slowly a couple inches or so left or right, and if I move the stick further, then the plane will move faster. In proportion to how far the stick has moved.

For yaw movements I use the rudder pedals. A good way to map moving up or down slow or fast proportionally, I imagine would be the toe brakes. I use a rocker switch to move up or down slowly or quickly because I had no toe brakes until a couple weeks ago (VKB pedals don't  have toe brakes).

If you are not in slew mode, then these controllers do not slew the plane. They do the normal stick and rudder functions.

I only recently got toe brakes (VKB pedals have no toe brakes).

Good find, thanks for pointing this out. 👍

So it can be done with the XBox controller and only works if u use the Y key and leave the other settings as they are ?

I'll have to test that out any time soon..

cheers 😉

Can be done with xbox controller. You can map slew mode to anything or just use the Y key. (I use the F5 key on keyboard). You have to go to Controller page and remap everything to the xbox controller, or to a yoke, stick, pedal, or any other axis.

I have up and down on a rocker. And a flightstick for forward, backward, left, right. And footpedal for yaw. I don't map roll (I don't see a need to roll the plane in slew mode).

If you set up the main FS map page to start a flight on a runway, MSFS always puts you too far forward. So I yaw backwards to the beginning of the runway.

What about the Into Orbit part ? 🙂

Just for that use the F4 up or F1 down keyboard key..

Would be at least OK for me..

cheers 😉

If you have Axis and Ohs software, you can use an axis for doing two different functions. Which function happens depends on whether another key or button is pressed at the same time. Therefore:  hold the button which you mapped as a "shift" key down, and push left toe brake the plane will rise fast. But don't press the "shift key down, and press the same left toebrake, then the plane will rise slowly. So that shift button "shifts"  the function between either rise fast or rise slow.

I used AAO to make a shift key that changes yaw trim left to either fast trim or slow trim. And did the same for yaw trim right.

I usually have an additional xbox controller attached for droning around and its perfect for slewing around also. It was never so easy and smooth to slew. Much better than esp platforms. If you invest just a few minutes in configuring properly it will be nice and smooth.

Try with pausing the aircraft before going to Y mode.

How fast the aicraft moves when being slewed depends on the altitude. At lower altitudes you should be able to get finer control.

Having to use an entirely different controller to properly use slew mode is not better than what we had with ESP. I don't know why Asobo butchered this basic tool that had been working perfectly in FS for 20+ years.

Slew mode works great with XBox controller

Thats an example and nobody forcing you to use "another" controller. You can use whatever controller you want. Just configure yours properly.  🤷

It still works the same if you take 5 minutes to set it up.

I have my stick mapped to the translate functions with the twist set to rotate, and buttons for up & down. It works exactly the same for me as it did in both FSX and P3D. There is absolutely no difference.
