Parts of the UK are poised for heavy rain and flooding over the next few days ahead of the arrival of Storm Ciarán. Flood warnings are in place across parts of England, Scotland and Wales, and there are also amber rain warnings in Northern Ireland. Ciarán is set to bring strong winds and heavy rain to southern England and Wales when it arrives on Thursday. It comes after a number of areas in the UK faced flooding at the weekend. Forecasters warned that saturated ground conditions caused by the persistent wet weather will increase the risk of flooding. Edited October 30, 20232 yr by martin-w

October 31, 20232 yr Author Thursday, at high tide, 'll be checking out the waves. They often breach the sea wall so will be interesting to see if they reach the road.
October 31, 20232 yr Since the UK started giving storms names people are flipping didn`t bother before, living in Kent when the worst storm of century hit Sevenoaks no longer has seven oaks. On this day in history 1982 the Thames Flood Barrier was raised for the first time. this due to the FACT that London will be under water buy the turn of the Century [2000]. October 31, 20232 yr Author 2015 I recall, storm names. I recall people did bother before, its just an easier classification method. Designed to avoid confusion and streamline communication. Don't recall anybody saying London would definitively be under water by 2000. 2050 maybe. Its right that people do "bother" severe storms cost lives and millions in damage, preparation for such storms is important.
October 31, 20232 yr Hurricane Otis had 165 mph winds when it hit Acapulco: Why did Hurricane Otis get so strong, so fast? Damage was extensive. https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/10/29/2202303/-A-hurricane-flattened-a-city-of-one-million-leaving-no-food-or-water-and-the-dead-to-rot?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=trending&pm_medium=web
October 31, 20232 yr Author My daughters just told me the new forecast is 100 mph in Jersey and 90 in Guernsey. States are saying stay at home. Shelves in shops are looking empty, people are stocking up. Seems silly for one day, but the cargo boats won't sail so shops won't restock. I'm still planning to be a maniac and check out the sea breaching the wall. Last time it happened the waves ended up in the middle of the road.

The media exaggerate any severe weather nowadays because 1)they are coerced to by govts., 2) most of the reporters are mindless ideologues, and 3)they sensationalize and hype everything to make more money. There have been devastating storms, floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes for thousands of years, but nowadays it's all made to seem unusual and unprecedented. Nothing to do with coercion by governments. They don't need to be coerced to SELL their product. Meanwhile, property is damaged and lives are lost in storms. So I for one am glad the authorities are warning us to stay at home and are making preparations for the investable property damage and injuries.
October 31, 20232 yr I think that this: credits Wikipedia: was the initial motivation for the present approach to storm forecasting: Quote A few hours before the Great Storm of 1987 broke, on 15 October 1987, he said during the weather: "Earlier on today, apparently, a woman rang the BBC and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way. Well, if you're watching, don't worry, there isn't!". The storm was the worst to hit South East England for three centuries, causing record damage and killing 19 people. Setting aside ludicrous conspiracy theories like "coerced to by govts", all kinds of people and organisations rely on weather forecasts to plan their activities. To err a bit on the side of excess is far safer than to minimise something that turns out to be a disaster. Better to cancel an event and lose a bit of money, than to run it in the face of adverse weather and lose lives. The 1979 Fastnet Race being a case in point, although wasn't due to a lack of accurate weather forecasting, but a dramatic change in the weather itself.1979 Fastnet Race - Wikipedia

November 1, 20232 yr I was at my parents' flat in London when that storm hit in October 1987. I remember the wind howling overnight, and then suddenly it stopped. I looked out of the window to see the Moon in the sky, and a couple of small clouds drifting slowly by. Soon after that, the strong winds returned. Probably the only time that I have ever witnessed a definitive "eye" in a storm.
