Frame Generation Question

Featured Replies

I see there is a very wrong thread regarding the frame generation mod so I apologize for a new thread.  I just had a few questions and thought it would be finding a needle in a haystack in that thread.  Can someone answer the following?

1) what does it do exactly and does it work?  I have a 3080 TI

2) any issues with it and the Fenix?

3) Is it easy to set up?  Does it require lots of technical installation/editing?

Thanks!

1: It gives you FG on all RTX cards, not only the 4000 series (i have a 3080Ti too). How it works, it's just a drop-in of a dll file and register hack (not sure if this last one is still needed, latest version i tried was 0.70, i didn't remove the register hack after removing the dll, not needed)

2: general issues: ghosting around graphical edges, panning not as smooth as without the mod
Fenix: No clue, never flown it.

3: yes, it is as good as plug and play to set up.

But.. i reversed back to non-FG simply because the problems in 2 and DX12 which cause graphical anomalies compared to DX11 + DX11 gives more overhead on GPU Ram then DX12 does.
Since i run the sim at 40 FPS capped, i can cranck up the settings. I don't need more FPS on a slow speed sim like MSFS (DCS is another story, since i fly often low and fast, 40 FPS isn't enough to get a smooth experience).

I was a skeptic from the get-go, but tried it. Super simple. Newest version is at

https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/738?tab=files

Try the universal version. No registry modification is required. Follow that other AVSIM thread for finding the MSFS exe file.

I had no problem with ghosting, but admit to having a very limited number of add-ons and mods. No add-on scenery, for example. Other than that, it works as advertised.

No experience with the Fenix. Why don't you try it in the interest of science and let us know how it goes?

Good luck.

What Lange said and--not worth even the trial.  The ghosting of all 2D windows during any kind of zooming, panning, kills any value of doubling your frame rate.  If you don't already have essentially PERFECTLY SMOOTH flight contact me via PM and I will help you get to perfectly smooth flight with all Ultra settings.  What kind of display are you driving?  If you haven't already pick up DynamicLOD--it has some real value w/o side effects.

I may be missing something important, here, @Noel, but what is a 2D window? I didn't know that MSFS has 2d cockpits anymore, much less windows.

Do we need a hack with RTX 4070 or it works naturally?

No. As a forty series card you have FG as an option anyway.

I leave the ATC "window" open though can minimize it to just the top line, so it's a window that is subject to SEVERE ghosting with any kind of zoom or panning.  And opened 2D windows as well (right alt button click on a gauge window). Plus, and this is very important:  overall panning is worse, irrespective of ghosting.  And worse still if I look out the side of the plane during taxi it sort of flickers for lack of a better word.  In my POV frame rate is ALWAYS secondary to perfectly smooth, stutter-free animation.  I have that already and while there is a difference, when it's perfectly smooth and stutter-free at say a frame rate or 70 (w/ the hack, or with RTX 4000x), versus a rate of 35, the difference is really modest at best.  When people dis this comment ad hoc, my sense is they've not experienced ultra smooth stutter-free animation at 35.  I never had for decades until I came upon one method to create this, and it's held up over a year now since stumbling upon it.   Right now my primary concern is insufficient VRAM and a CPU that is marginal for my settings, so am contemplating a new build sometime this year, likely after MSFS 2024 releases as their touted MAJOR improvement in performance secondary to optimized multithreading may obviate the need for a new CPU at least, unless magically VRAM demand goes down in which case won't need a new build.

From your POV maybe, but not at all nonsense 1000% correct here.

Now I get it. Thanks.

I just went into MSFS with the FG mod running, and vsync enabled in the Nvidia control panel, but off in the sim. I can't see any kind of ghosting on the 2D windows when I pan or zoom. They look fine and the main window looks the same as it does when no 2D windows are present.

This seems to be one of those FS oddities that have been arising since the dawn of the flighsim age. Everybody seems to get different results. As skeptical as I was about this mod when it first came out, I'm a fan now. It might not work for everyone, but it's certainly easy enough to try and seems safe enough.

Cheers.

That's a helluva claim there Noel, care to share this on the board so all can benefit?

I have many times Cowboy, only to be attacked or ridiculed by people who believe frame rate is all that matters--but I know they have not witnessed what I refer to as in 30y of doing this not once did anyone mention the method and I thought I had liquid smooth animation for years until I came upon this method, else they would dispense w/ the ridicule.  A few people tried it themselves and found the best results ever for them.  The basics are in my sig...

I concur with Noel.   I have a 3080Ti and tried the hack excitedly.  Yes, the FPS shoot up, but the ghosting, panning jitters and other artifacts were really bad - especially for a TrackIR user.

I look forward to the development of the tech, and perhaps getting 'proper' FG for 20/30 cards in the future.  But at the present time, I could simply never have stuck with that hack.  High FPS but really bad, ghosty, jittery visuals is just no good.

I tried to tease out why it works well for some, and not others, and w/ regard to NVCP vsync, got this reply:

  • Vsync to what refresh rate if using Vsync?  VSYNC OFF IN MSFS. (VSYNC "ON" IN NVIDIA CP IS NOT MANDATORY)

So I may not have tried that.  Easy enough to retest so I will and will let you know.  The problem w/ straight Vsync is that, because of my robust settings on now modest hardware, I need to be able to limit the frame rate.  Do you use a frame rate limit along w/ NVCP vsync?  Then there's the issues of panning and flickering out the side window, which who knows might resolve if the ghosting does.
