Using G1000 in the sim, do you like it ?

It is not a glass cockpit vs steam gauge preference nor a thread on the proper representation of the G1000 in the sim (thank you so much WorkingTitle) but really a user interface question.

I find the G1000 usage in a sim (i.e. with no specific hardware) very cumbersome and painfull compared to other system like G3000, G5000 or GTN750 that are a lot more user friendly to use.

I know that in real life it is a lot easier to user rotator than in the sim but I get to a point where I sometime decide not to fly an overall good plane (like the Kodiak) because it is ftted with a G1000 and it is a pain in the neck to use it (and yes I know there is a trick to use the keyboard instead of the rotator but still)

Am I the only one who find this specific piece of avionics not suited at all for home computer simming ?

When G1000 was release I had to take a class and pass exam to get qualify fly aircraft equipped with G1000. By that time I already had my commercial certificate but none of the aircraft had G1000. The only "glass" I was familiar at the time with Avidyne and Aspen yet G1000 felt completely foreign to me LOL So tell you the truth nothing is east that  come with knobs and dials in IRL. In contrast, anything with touch screen where you can quickly type is way way more easier!

You question interface by  setting in front of the computer. Imagine how we  question interface flying single pilot IFR. LOL We basically train ourself few essential shortcuts which we can use quickly to set up change/approach deviate or navigate to different airport. Things of course get easier when you have co-pilot or autopilot.

From my experience original Avidyne  "glass" was more intuitive and user friendly than G1000, but Avidyne lost it competition to Garmin and that was end of it. Continue talking about interface - Aspen is another thing. LOL They decided to use same knob for altimeter settings and HSI course. You can't imagine how many pilot I flew (including myself ) accidentally thinking they are changing course while in fact they were messing up altimeter LOL

Yes to all of this albeit the Avidyne is not so bad... Sadly the R9 is fantastic but never "took off" 🙂

Fantastic autopilot and GTN units that slide in to replace the 530/430's and add 3D view.

Their warranty and support were always the achilles heel.

I think Avydine suffers from quality issues up to this date. That is why it lost competition.

I actually own IFD400. I know Garmin isn't saint either, I did repair my GNS430 twice. But Avidyne (brand new) really pull weird stuff intermittently on me. First com1  went static when transmitting. So I put on bench in loacal avionic shop to get tested. In addition they checked every single wire and antenna in my airplane. Everything came out ok, until month later same problem again. Duh!

So I shipped it back to Avidyne, and they told me that in addition to com problem they found damaged screen. What? My unit at the time was just barely 2 years old. I didn't even noticed any damage other than IFD400 was running hot time to time. So I paid $2000 for repair until month later during IFR flight IFD400 totally lost signal on LPV approach then problem with com1 started again. Anyway, I was very upset so Avidyne , so they sent me completely new unit honoring warranty of their "certified repair". It's been little over year, fingers crossed - no problem so far. Meanwhile my two Garmin G5 been working for several years without problems!

Afaik WT didn't do its magic with the GTN750, right? From what I recall there are two payware options for the GTN750 and there are some sort of problems with the navdata (like using trainer software or something)...? Your touch screen remark got me interested. 😉 Dos the A2A Comanche work with one of those GTN's? I might have to look into it a bit more.

I believe that either the TDS or PMS50 GTN750 works in the Comanche.

I use the TDS unit and would highly recommend it, unless you need current navdata at all times.

It comes with Garmin navdata that is updated when the Garmin Trainer is updated.

Bert

The TDS GTN750 navdata is from dec '22 with the latest Trainer update.

The sim and real G1000 is pretty clunky.  It was like Garmin's first big glass idea and it just doesn't flow very well.  A pilot can easily get behind the entire aircraft trying to navigate the G1000.  The newer NXi version is a bit better in the real plane especially... smoother animations, better features etc.

There's just too many buttons imo.

This is not to downgrade the amazing work WT has done...and they have.  I just tend to avoid planes with it.  The G3000 is much better with the touch screen operation...but still has some clunky things.

I'm really looking forward to the G3X from WT, and aircraft which use the G3X and GTN combinations!

My favorite Garmin product (real life and sim) is without a doubt, the GTN 750.  The 650 is nice too and I've used both irl.  Obviously I prefer the TDS in MSFS.

Proficiency with the 750 earned me a ton of right seat ridealong time in a friend's 310 from 2016 until the early part of the pandemic, when he sold the 310 and moved to Florida.  My proficiency came from extensive sim use of the RXP GTN 750.

Oh certainly.  I used the rxp version extensively in p3d and xp11.

I believe it was in the RXP forum that we met! Long time ago now.....  😉

I love using G1000nxi aircraft because I was fortunately able to buy the full FlightSimBuilder (FSB) hardware suite of PFD, MFD and Audio panel as a birthday present to myself.  Without these I probably would use G3000 aircraft more however using Mobiflight I've also mapped many G3000 functions using the FSB hardware.
