I know the Asobo "weather radar" is bare (iirc isn't it some sort of bitmaps?), but IMO it is better than nothing. I dont understand why Fenix is so reluctant to implement it in their product. Is it a technical limitation? It's confusing to me as I see other products (Inibuild, FSS Ejets, Leonardo, etc.) with the default weather radar....

John.

It‘s useless for aviation and navigation. Without being able to tilt the WX radar according to your climb/descent path, it means nothing except for „somewhere ahead is bad weather, but you will not be able to find out at which altitude“. Therefore putting any development costs into it makes no sense if you‘re aiming for study level.
FSS Ejets have no weather radar, by the way. The others included it for „visual“ reasons, I guess.

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

the recent patch is better but I see it broke some cosmetic things like you cant turn off the cabin visibility now. Also the cabin lighting is completely dark when you look at it from the outside at night even if you turn it on from the EFB. Also alot of people are posting about the turn knobs for things like cabin temp looking janky now instead of a realistic smooth turning motion. Hopefully they take care of this stuff shortly but none of it is a showstopper.

Technical. If I remember correctly, the Asobo "weather radar" isn't compatible with the technology Fenix uses for display rendering. So it would require another rewrite of all the displays (bear in mind they already did this once for v2b1, and I doubt it was quick/easy).

I noticed this as well - all of the issues you mention.

As for the weather radar, I couldn’t care less, and struggle to understand why this might be a reason to avoid a purchase. Like @Fiorentoni says, why have a radar with to functionality, only for eye candy…

Btw, the missing wx radar is not Fenix fault. It is MS unwillingness to provide the needed data in an API.

I don't see why data is an issue. Weather data is already being read and displayed on Asobo's proprietary radar. AFAIK, the issue for developers is there is no tilt function in Asobo's radar, making it unrealistic. If Asobo weren't so reluctant to add a tilt function for whatever reason and provide a proper radar, developers could just use that (as some are already doing) without having to build one on their own, and thus without the need to expose data.

In short: If Asobo added a tilt function we would have a realistic radar for all third parties to use and no one would need data.

Source please? That‘s the first I hear about it. Until now RSR and Kok have again and again said that the standard WX radar is unusable and not worth integrating at all.

Here, after talking about the challenges of actually simulating a wx radar, he's referencing the Asobo WX display and says: "Could we turn that on? Maybe we have😉You'll have to get the 777 and take a look"

RSR in his Q&A video a few weeks ago did not directly say that the 777 would have WX radar. He dropped a hint that it might - while discussing the radar topic, he said something along the line of “maybe we’ll do it - you’ll have to wait and see”.

Edit: outermarker’s post right above links to the actual comment RSR made

Thanks, I guess I could return to actually reading what RSR says 😄
Still a surprisingly fundamental change of attitude versus this topic from PMDG.

I have noticed the temp knobs. Haven't looked for the cabin lights yet, as I have not yet done a night flight with the latest Fenix update. Still, the update has improved my overall Fenix A320 experience, and the aircraft is more fun that ever to fly, in my experience. And, I can do with or without the weather radar. I have survived in the sim world this long without one, so I can survive longer 😉

AMD Ryzen 9900X3D & ASUS X870E Gaming Plus MB, w/64 Gb GSkill DDR5 RAM, PNY RTX 5090 GPU, lots of SSD's and M.2 drives, HAVN  Case, Virpil VPC Panels 2 and 3, Virpil Constellation Alpha Stick, Virpil Rotor TCS Plus w/ Hawk-60 Collective grip, TM TCA Yoke Boeing Edition, TM HOTAS A-10 and F/A-18 Sticks and TM TPR Rudder pedals. Currently on Win11

Well, the weather RADAR is nice I guess🤔. But until there is weather within the sim that forces me to rely on the RADAR as I do in real life, I'm not sure how necessary it is right now.

I'm retired now after flying for 40 years. Even if the radar available in MSFS is kind of mickey mouse i still like it. I remember when the radars in the rw were pretty basic compared to what is around today but they had the h@@l beat out of having nothing. So I am good with what JF & black Square is offering and perhaps PMDG in their about to be released 777. Adds to the immersion for me.

I definitely hear ya. I've just gotten so accustomed to it being a tool. It's always in standby unless I'm departing into storms or picking through them. The fun is in building the big picture with the RADAR, looking at the winds and judging how many miles left or right to you need request to steer clear. I do long for the day when storms are actually dangerous and you have the ability to request ATC for deviations. That will be so cool. Especially at night or in the clouds when you can't see the cells and really have to rely on your RADAR skills to stay clear.
