June 27, 20241 yr Hi all, I have being using FSX se for along time and over the years many tweaks have surfaced with lots of different opinions on what works and what doesn't and so on So the question is, and yes it is VERY subjective what tweaks are really needed in FSX se. I use Steve's Direct x10 fix -Infinity mask= -highmemfix= -buffer pools= Any others I have missed? Cheers Rhys
June 28, 20241 yr You mean Affinity Mask, right? That's only if your CPU has HT (Intel) or SMT (AMD) and you have no desire or way to disable it. That, FFTF (only if you want to used in-sim FPS lock) and that's all. Highmemfix is only needed if you have the Boxed edition. FSX-SE does not need that tweak. BP=0 never worked for me. In which computer are you running FSX now? Best regards,Luis Hernández Main rig: self built, AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D (with SMT off and CO -50 mV), 2x16 GB DDR4-3200 RAM, Nvidia RTX 5060Ti 16GB, 256 GB M.2 SSD (OS+apps) + 2x1 TB SATA III SSD (sims) + 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD (storage), ID-Cooling SE-224-XTS air cooler, Viewsonic VX2458-MHD 1920x1080@120-144 Hz (G-sync compatible), Windows 11. Running P3D v5.4 (with v4.5 scenery objects as an additional library, just in case), FSX-SE, MSFS2020, MSFS2024 and even FS9! Lossless Scaling for all my sims. What a godsend...Mobile rig: ASUS Zenbook UM425QA (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H APU @3.2 GHz and boost disabled, 1 TB M.2 SSD, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 Pro). June 28, 20241 yr Hi Rhys, The best advice I found with FSX was to avoid all tweaks (apart from highmemfix if you have the boxed edition)! When I first got FSX many many years ago I overtweaked it to the point where I had to uninstall and reinstall it. After reinstalling it I then rigidly followed the Avsim FSX Configuration Guide when setting it up again and basically I haven't looked back since! Cheers, Bill
June 29, 20241 yr Author Hi Thanks for the tips Yes, Affinity Mask, my i5 multi core does not have hyperthreading. I have got that tweak in my cfg file, sounds like I need to remove it. I might delete my current cfg file (back up the current one) and start with a clean and fresh cfg file. and follow the Avsim Config guide Cheers Rhys
June 30, 20241 yr Yes, that might be your best choice. Now you know you don't need any Affinity Masks. July 30, 20241 yr Just follow the helpful FSX FAQ from this site. Also, if it is performance you seek, everyone is going crazy over the frame generation program called Lossless Scaling. I can literally play FSX with 10fps perfectly fine now, amazing stuff.
August 25, 20241 yr After migrating to a much stronger computer with Windows 11, FSX is worse than before when I used a Windows 7 box. I observed that there's no point up-ticking the scenery settings, using the same reasonably low settings is the only thing that works (for me). As far as tweaking the configuration goes, here's what I'm trying with moderate success: -highmemfix= -buffer pools= -frame rate unlocked with FSX, it's always a "wait and see" what happens depending on the area I'm flying. August 26, 20241 yr Two that I would add would be the one that improves LOD render distance for textures, if your PC does not take a performance hit. It did make cities significantly prettier for the textures. unfortunately the render distance for the object is dependent on its quality. i.e. the only way to have beautiful cities is to have custom scenery. Custom scenery draw distance is much further than autogen. Unfortunately the autogen is limited to the in game setting menu with respect to density, but they will always pop up at the last second. I have not tried it yet, but there is a setting that significantly improves draw distance for simobjects, i.e. ai planes. This I think is an absolute must, otherwie planes spawn into view 0.5 NM out, which is last second. Edited August 26, 20241 yr by Sweetd31

Unfortunately you can have a state of the art PC with a powerful processor and graphics card and lots of RAM but if you are using FSX with resource heavy addons (aircraft, scenery or both) then you might quickly approach the 4GB VAS limit which is when problems develop. Although there is nothing to be lost by experimenting with things like LOD and AI draw distance, you need to be aware that increasing the render distance for both will add to the resource usage and increase the risks of an OOM (out of memory) warning as you approach the 4GB limit. AI aircraft, in particular, carry a significant VAS hit. Of course if you are mainly flying using default aircraft and scenery then VAS issues should be less of a problem. Bill
August 28, 20241 yr Here is a working link to the Avsim Guide. Here is a working link to Nick's Bible That should keep you busy for years.
August 28, 20241 yr Thanks. But that is version 1.0. There was a version 2.0 put out in 2017. But I can't find it.
August 29, 20241 yr I used a bunch of cfg file tweaks for the boxed version of FSX, but none for the Steam Edition. The Steam Edition has the fixes already in it, so cfg file modifications are not necessary. My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.
