Live Weather is completely broken/bugged September 2024

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Not sure if anyone else on here has noticed but the Live Weather in MSFS is broken/bugged at the moment.

I created an official bug report post on their forums and they've marked it as 'investigating' and there's plenty of examples in that post, but if anyone else would like to vote it up or contribute to it then I'll leave the link here: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/live-weather-data-injection-bug-september-2024-not-general-accuracy/653805

Example of EGKK from this morning, which should be rainy with lots of cloud:

Then some time later, load back in and the cloud is there:

But then load in again some minutes later and it's all gone again. And this is what is happening constantly, cloud is there, then it's gone, then it's back, then it's gone.

Looks like some sort of server/injection/data error.

You can also see now the world map cloud overlay has updated and is wrong.

Actual cloud cover:

World map this morning which matched actual satellite fairly closely:

World map now, wrong or outdated or something.

Even when world map cloud cover is correct though, the actual injection of the weather when loaded in is bugged.

I bought Active Sky FS because MSFS "Live" weather sometimes doesn't work as well as it should. I stopped waiting for ASOBO to fix it.

Active sky not for me sadly, I do own it, but I don’t like the idea of injecting a global weather ‘theme’ or ‘snapshot’ based off of a METAR. Here in Europe especially the METARs don’t pull in enough cloud layers for it to be realistic.

No doubt server related issues....again.

Seems that way yes, although it's been doing this for around a week now (but seems to have gotten worse in the past few days) so, not holding out for any resolution any time soon...

Cumulous only clouds, look realistic to you?

I "flew" into Gatwick earlier: cloud all the way down requiring engine anti-ice and rain on the way in but by the time the jetway attached. all the GSX staff has shorts and sunglasses on.

I've used ActiveSky in all the preceding iterations of FSX and have it for MSFS but unfortunately it's locked out of MSFS  to the extent that the cloud depiction is awful.  A terrible waste by MSFS of the talent at HiFi Simulations

No, but neither does clear sky as far as the eye can see just because a METAR reports NCD or CAVOK, when there are higher overcast layers.

Anyway, this topic isn't MSFS v Active Sky, there's plenty of those already.

Totally agree with the OP. I remarked that too.

Today I did a flight from Aachen-Maastricht airport to Antalya Turkey.

Lots of clouds at Maastricht but within 15 minutes I saw clear sky all the way up to Antalya where there was an OC in reality..

Server-related I guess, like others have mentioned... it's hard to be patient with so many issues lately. Not sure if I even believe this will be resolved in the next sim.

You can also use it in passive mode and take advantage of the effects. Having said that, I flown in Europe and so far, I like the depicted weather. Realistic or not is still better than a broken service. I still love MSFS 2020 despite the unresolved issues. 4 years and they still haven't fixed the weather or flight planner.

Passive Depiction Mode

Passive mode is used with live weather and allows MSFS’s internal live weather depiction to take full control of weather depiction in the simulator, while Active Sky FS provides Active Air Effects and all other non-depiction features (mapping, planning, voice features, conditions report, web companion app, etc.) This can provide better regional variation and cloud variations outside of Preset control, recommended for LIVE WEATHER VFR and casual flights where visuals and effects are more important than weather conditions accuracy.

And they plan on streaming even more data in MS2024 too reduce the install size. It’s not like Microsoft is going to suddenly build more Azure data centers for November. I predict it not going well at all.

I agree wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, the truth is that at the time I'm writing this, this thread has 1.3k views, but the bug report thread linked in the OP has just 26 votes. Not to mention the involvement in the investigation...
