Tried tried ending and restarting flight, tried different airports, tried restarting sim, tried restarting PC, removed and re-installed, it's feet are firmly nailed to the ruddy perch. Serves me right for saying I haven't had a problem recently.

I can't be arsed tonight, I'll try again tomorrow and log a ticket if it still doesn't work.

You say you reinstalled the plane, but was this from a version on your HD or was it a newly downloaded version? As I said earlier, there was a small update a few weeks ago. If you haven't done so, try updating via the PMDG operations centre, or redownloading from the PMDG site.

Something to try:

Load sim up

select any default plane. Something simple.

Exit sim

Restart sim, check that default is still selected.

Now select the 738 and try starting a flight.

I uninstalled from the control panel, re-installed from a freshly downloaded file, and then installed the update from the latest version of the ops centre. It absolutely refueses to work. In case my router was messing about, I even tried tethering my phone's 5G to the PC

I've logged a ticket with PMDG.

Oh bummer! I hope you get it sorted.

Try clearing the compiled WASM files for the plane.  Delete those 4 types of files in that directory or, in a command window or batch file:

cd %userprofile%\appdata\Roaming\"Microsoft Flight Simulator"\Packages

cd pmdg-aircraft-738
del /s *.cache
del /s *.dll
del /s *.lib
del /s *.obj

The next time you load up the plane, it will recompile.  Worked for me, or maybe it was random.  Still a bug with PMDG.

One possible solution is to enable "Developer" mode while you're in your flight. This has a menu option to choose different aircraft. Choose the PMDG from this. It will reload and this might fix the issue. 
 

I will refrain from expressing my opinion about what this issue tells us about PMDG as I would struggle to do so with appropriate moderation. 

Thankfully it doesn't happen mid flight. So you can hit the restart button several times in the sim, sometimes it takes several tries, or back out of the sim and start with a default plane.

Then reload your pmdg plane. Had to do that yesterday. Pretty annoying.

I tried BufordTX's suggestion of deleting the compiled files, no joy.

I tried selecting a different aircraft, no joy.

 

I then tried this procedure which fixed it:

1. Removed 'PMDG 737-800 for MSFS' from Windows Control Panel

2. I deleted these folders (I searched the C & D drives for any files/folders containing 'PMDG'):

Loaded the 738 yesterday after a long Pause from PMDG 737's and it was the first load to the Sim and worked beautiful at all, from beginning and first load with no reload !!

If the problem is DRM the solution by PMDG is very simple, but it is PMDG of course.
