Active Sky for 2024 is so superior to...

...Default weather!

I flew from my hometown airport, KABE, Allentown, Pa., this morning (Christmas Eve) using default weather in MSFS and it was super DARK and everything, including the plane and cockpit, was hard to see.  It had snowed over night and it was cloudy in real life.  No snow on the ground!  I quickly ended the sim because that would have been quite unenjoyable flying under those conditions.

Then I fired up ACTIVE SKY for 2024 and went back to my airport.  WOW.  Snow everywhere, sky perfectly cloudy as it was out my home's window, and the cockpit and plane didn't suffer from the dark dullness.  I really enjoyed flying in what were real weather conditions.

By the way, I always fly in real weather both in MSFS and P3d.  That's one of main reasons I love this hobby so much.  As real as it gets! I really do love Active Sky for MSFS.

We have had "unified global weather dataset" for nearly 2 decades with localized weather high-resolution weather setting capability since ASNext around 11 years ago We are asking for write access

  • No Active Sky has no weather fronts, as in: Clear skies to the left, to the right, behind me... but a huge front 50nm in front of me.

  • It does not. At least not in live weather. I am happy to be wrong if anyone is ever able to show me an approaching weatherfront using AS in any sim where half of the sky is almost totally overcast and

Agree! And even though 2024 now have 24hr historical weather, sometimes I set weather to a few days ago (or longer) using Active Sky. One of my favorite addons!

Totally agree.

Everything is superior with AS:

- Snow coverage (at least in my neck of the woods, Northern BC, Canada)

- Multiple Cloud Layers

- Haze/Fog depiction

- Ability to set different time in the sim, but have real live weather (Asobo totally borked that one)

- larger variety of cloud depiction

- convincing overcast

etc

And no weather fronts. Sadly...

All of this. Especially clouds and the layering.

My only issue was about a week ago the "smoothing" wasn't smooth at all. In fact, of all issues pertaining to weather in the sim....I want accuracy, yes. But with that is not having an abrupt change. Need gradual. I am talking like it going from cavok-esque to "OMG I am flying in IFR conditions all of sudden!" kind of change. I think it was fixed recently. Haven't noticed it since.

I use both in 2024, and to be honest from my point of view i see very little difference. In 2020 undoubtably it made a big difference to default, but i'm not so sure, i certainly would'nt be saying everything is superior. but that's just my view on it.

I have recently put my GA in the hanger and have been flying the Just Flight RJ and the Fenix A320.

ASFS is great for airliner flying, even better if a flight plan is entered - this is easy with the Simbrief flight plan import.

Yeah I do really like it, just not to keen on how the weather looks the same in each direction - fully appreciate that’s not hifi’s fault as it’s a limitation they have to deal with, but not seeing different weather in the distance from what I’m currently overflying at all times is a bit of an immersion killer I struggle with.

I also use RealTurb which has significant in-cloud turbulence, something I haven’t had with neither AFSF nor default.

Doesn't 2024 have two different time sliders? There's on on the custom tab that changes time but keeps the weather current, then there's the historical one on the the live tab that changes time AND weather, based on historical data

Were they able to show different weather in the same sky in any previous sims?

I don’t know, but think I may have read somewhere that they could in MSFS if they could take full control or have proper a proper API. Obviously it’s more that it’s major drawback against existing live weather within MSFS.

I was of the impression that weather is attached to time in 2024 unless something has changed.

That's likely Asobo's  decision, not to allow access to the weather engine of MSFS 2024, I've heard....
