A Big Thank You to Nick N and the folks who brought us ...

Recommended Posts

I'd just like to start out by saying THANK YOU to Nick N. If it wasn't for his tips posted here in the AVSIM forums and the creation of GEX enhanced, I most definitely would have given up on FSX. I, like a lot of people tried to run FSX with all sliders maxed. I have now found an awesome balance and the sim is better then ever. I just took a flight in the Aerosoft beaver and was amazed!! Not only was the scenery awesome but I also encountered a flock of birds over a river. I recommend that anyone with this sim purchase GEX, FEX, and Ultimate Terrain. It isn't perfect, but it sure is close. Thanks again Nick and all others that have been improving FSX for us. Northern Ontario, Canada has never looked so good in a sim!!!! I can finally go back to flying without the frustration of before.

All this talk of FSX going great for those that have had issues with it before is encouraging me to give FSX a shot once again. Is there any thread in particular where Nick N spills the beans on FSX and OS setup or is this info spread out across many threads here at AVSIM? If the former, can someone please throw me a link, as my search efforts are not coming up with anything quite as precious.Gary

Use with caution though... XP does not like to get pushed around very much. Also, I am not crazy about the "defrag by name" as I usually defrag fragemented files only, then again I do not use O & O defrag so I am not sure how well it works.Regards,

Well Gary...I'd say they're sort of spread out. A while back I started another hobby called "Saving Nick N. Threads" Here's what I have so far:(btw there's that one big David Roch Thread in there too and the last is a simvation where Nick talks about Raid Arrays. Can I add my vote of thanks to Nick as well. I went through the instructions not really believing that they would make that much difference. Was I wrong - it improved my performance of FSX to make it a pleasure to fly again.

>Also, I am not crazy>about the "defrag by name" as I usually defrag fragemented>files only, then again I do not use O & O defrag so I am not>sure how well it works. It makes a ton of sense for FS or other games though because those types of programs often load in data sequentially by file name. If you don't have things physically sorted by name on the HD, the read head has to jump all over the disk grabbing all those files, if they're in order it just reads them in one motion or else with much less movement.

I did... you can get it at most major book storeshttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/186840.jpgjust a joke... LOLI really appreciate the thanks guys... and it's not necessary by any means. No one should have to fly a poor environment. We should be having fun, not pulling our hair out trying to chase issues and stutters. I really do hope the design of the next FS takes into better account a baseline for performance/visuals and ensure it can be met without jumping through hoops. Optimizing will always be a way to get more however the base product should meet certain criteria out of the box.

That was excellent, Nick! :-lol :-lol :-lolI have also enjoyed seeing the "well dentured hounds" show up now and then too! :-hahBut best of all, I've really enjoyed seeing your many highly informative posts here and elsewhere on FS websites showing folks that there is a stepwise process that one can follow to make the most of one's current version of FS (...and Windows XP too!).Thanks for showing both ACES and "3PDs" that there are ways to make FS "as real as it gets" even now on the FSX platform that was somewhat "unrealistic" out of the box.I also applaud the call for FS base functionality and technical knowledge level requirement in future FS versions at RTM to be within the reach of (and within the range of reasonable expectations for) the average FS consumer, while still offering optional tweaking parameters for those of us who enjoy rolling up our sleeves and tinkering under the hood. :-beerchug When you've had a chance to do the necessary evaluation and testing, there is a whole new generation of folks out there in the Windows Vista environment who would be grateful for any help you might share on how get FS running better on that OS as well. :-violin You've shifted into an overdrive of extraordinary productivity since late last year in spite of apparently being on the road a lot; I am hopeful you'll take good care of yourself so we'll all be able to enjoy many more of your new insights and "n-hancements" for FS in the future! :-)With admiration and appreciation,GaryGB
