This was a storm that was far worse than even predicted. I heard on the news this morning that this was so rare that the last storm of this magnitude took place in 1870! Fr. If it hadn't frozen solid, using a broom might have been possible. I could barely scrape even a small area using my hands as a "rake!" This was a very "wet" snow, not the light and fluffy stuff, darn it all... 🥶 Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator

January 11, 20251 yr I worked in the control tower at Hot Springs (the spa) back in the late seventies before the FAA closed it after the strike. It was non radar approach control and could get very challenging during the horse racing season. I do remember a good snow storm or two. This mourning I stepped outside to see the little dusting we had in upstate South Carolina and could only feel another dose of gratefulness to be retired. Reminiscing about when I was working and had to make the decision between venturing out on slick roads risking accident or incident or calling in. The problem there is no-one wants to be the only one to wuzz out and not come in😂 Retirement is fine. Vic green

Make absolutely sure the ramp is covered in something that's non-slip when it's wet. Rubber isn't good enough. Mine is currently topped by something that looks like astroturf. Falls are no joke. Of course, nothing is non-slip in snow and ice. My current wheelchair, which thankfully I don't need very often, is a cheapo "drive" model from the VA. The wheels will happily slip on the wet concrete ramp at the VA even when locked. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

It's far wider than I was imagining, so much so that another foot of width would allow my car to climb up the ramp! Not that I'd have tried it anyway... 😂 Oh, I've already "baptized" the new deck by falling on my left bun when stepping up. It's my own fault for trying to carry my groceries in two hands! January 12, 20251 yr I don't have to use the zoom feature on my screen as much. The color of things in general is great. I have problems with walking.[balance] I'll bear with it. The 20th is getting close.

I simply referenced *facts*. Your credentials as an Air Force Weather Forecaster 1)does not make you a meteorologist, and 2)doesn't make you any more qualified to make pronouncements about climate than anyone else. I can tell you what the weather was like thousands of years ago, most of North America was under a mile of ice, and when that ice melted we were left with a brand new landscape that included the formation of the Great Lakes, and a much shortened and smoothed out Appalachian Mountains as the ice grinded them down to what we see today. Prior to that they looked like the Rocky Mountains with volcanic activity, and the theory is the volcanic activity in the Appalaichan Mountains was what caused the Ice Age Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
January 12, 20251 yr Moderator One thing about Snow; it's all about the Moisture content. fluffy powder like snow that you can sweep away easily is much less prone to cause damage as compared to moisture laden 'Sierra Cement' which, as it accumulates, solidifies and becomes much heavier, crushing and snapping anything in its wake... car ports, branches and limbs, etc. Here in Denver we got about 3" of light snow earlier this Week; I swept the sidewalk as it was coming down and underneath the sidewalk was completely dry. Not like the snow we got in November, which was wet and sloppy. Edited January 12, 20251 yr by ViperPilot
January 12, 20251 yr Author Moderator I got a closer look at the antennas on the trunk lip, and it appears that the ATAS 120 and the dual-band antennas managed to survive as both their mounts allowed them to fold flat against the trunk. I still can't get into the driver's door so I can start the engine and allow it to warm up. I'm very glad that I was able to winterize the car's cooling system last week! Fr.
