This is not the kind of weather I would ever want to fly in hence I've cancelled my visit to Popham today!  However thanks to MS2024 I can go flying...and promptly crash. This is me at St Mary's

Hunkered down here in Galway, IE. The forecast in 5 hours time is 175km/h in the city, and up to 219km/h heading west out. NEVER in my life have we had any sort of storm with those kinds of numbers! The highest on record was 181km/h back in 1945 🫠

New wind speed record for Ireland - 183kmh (114mph) - recorded on a headland on the coast of County Galway at 5am. Almost a million homes and businesses without power across the island.

Ireland has been hit with a number of hurricanes over the years.  Here are just a few:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_of_the_Big_Wind - wind gusts of over 100 knots(185km/h).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storm_Ulysses

https://www.rte.ie/brainstorm/2024/0821/1465967-1822-ireland-hurricane-storm/ - hurricane which isn't well-recorded in the official weather history of Ireland

Who knows what extreme weather events hit Ireland and the UK before the 1800s when there was no weather instrumentation and accurate weather data.

We are so biased to recent events and tend to forget that these things have happened before.

Very dodgy in Scotland!

It certainly is! The Central Belt (That's predominantly Glasgow in the west to Edinburgh in the east and up into the southern areas of Fife is taking a right beating. One Ryanair flight from Stansted inexplicably* tried to land in Edinburgh late this morning, despite nothing flying below 30,000 ft around that part of the country. Took one loop around Peebles, another before lining up with Runway 24 and finally did a go around before heading back to Stansted (with Flightradar originally showing it as diverting to Cologne!). From my vantage point, a couple of miles away, it looked like a smooth enough approach (too far to detect wing wobble) but I'm sure it would have been a pretty rough experience for everyone on board.

*Probably trying to avoid delay payouts rather than achieving customer satisfaction.

Personally, I was supposed to be travelling to pick up the keys to my new property. No transport means it'll be Monday now. Hope it's still there when I arrive!😐

For me, you always know the weather will be bad when you book a moving truck, I've lost that lottery every time

All the best with your move

Thanks. One of my niece's partners was in removals, so he's offered to drive a van for me, so all I have to concern myself with is hiring it and filling it!

And watching the weather forecast.🤞 Not the best time of year to move house, but beggars can't be choosers.

A bit windy in the early hours. As Ray said, pretty much missed us.

My station is around 35 miles from the Irish Sea so inland winds are much reduced. Here’s my wind graph for the period covering the storm’s impact.

Max gust just 45mph. Thank goodness.

Nasty winds this morning. Gusts to 65.

Looks like a pressure squeeze over you. Although pressure is dropping rapidly here highest gust is just 30mph. More rain with this storm lasting into tomorrow.

It's forecast the same for Monday, too. Doesn't seem it'll drop below 50 till Wednesday according the the met office app.

The sun seems to be making an appearance, though.

Sidmouth, East Devon; we seem to be passing through the eye of a tremendous low pressure system right now.

Wind and rain all night followed by LOTS of wind and rain all morning, lightning and thunder about twenty minutes ago followed by hail and now looking at clouds moving northward as we pass into the eye again.

This thing is heading north eastward. Something to look forward to shortly…🙃
