Good music to fly to? Here are some ideas

Featured Replies

So, when I'm doing career mode (or just a long haul), I'd like to play some music in the background. Any recommendations for some nice classical/instrumental stuff? Maybe for different sceneries - desert, mountain, city, forest?

I asked ChatGPT and it actually did a decent job, so I thought I'd share, and maybe get to know some of your recommendations as well

Desert (Expansive, Mysterious, Timeless)

  • Philip Glass – Koyaanisqatsi Soundtrack (Minimalist, meditative)
  • Ludovico Einaudi – Nightbook (Dreamy piano with a sense of vastness)
  • Hans Zimmer – Dune Soundtrack (Epic, ethereal, and fitting for desert landscapes)
  • Ravi Shankar – Ragas (Sitar-driven Indian classical music, great for warm, arid settings)
  • Max Richter – On the Nature of Daylight (Soft, contemplative strings)

Mountains (Majestic, Serene, Powerful)

  • Jean Sibelius – Finlandia (Evokes grandeur and the raw power of nature)
  • Beethoven – Symphony No. 6 “Pastoral” (A peaceful countryside feel, perfect for alpine flights)
  • John Williams – The River (Sweeping orchestration with a sense of exploration)
  • Ólafur Arnalds – re:member (Modern, ambient classical)
  • Sigur Rós – Takk… (Post-rock with an ethereal, glacial feel)

City (Energetic, Elegant, Dynamic)

  • Gershwin – Rhapsody in Blue (Jazz-infused classical, perfect for flying over vibrant cities)
  • Claude Debussy – Clair de Lune (Refined, dreamy city skyline vibes at night)
  • Vangelis – Blade Runner Soundtrack (Futuristic, atmospheric synth and orchestration)
  • Yoko Kanno – Tank! (Cowboy Bebop Soundtrack) (Fast-paced jazz fusion, fun for buzzing skyscrapers)
  • Nils Frahm – Spaces (Minimalist, urban-inspired piano and electronica)

Forest (Lush, Peaceful, Enchanting)

  • Claude Debussy – Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (Nature-inspired, impressionistic)
  • Antonio Vivaldi – The Four Seasons (Spring & Autumn movements) (Lively, fresh, full of energy)
  • Ludovico Einaudi – Divenire (Flowing piano, capturing the organic beauty of forests)
  • Joe Hisaishi – Princess Mononoke Soundtrack (Magical, nature-centric)
  • George Winston – Autumn (Soft, rolling piano reminiscent of a quiet forest trail)

I tried John Williams – The River  and it really works well with my flight over the Pyrennees!

I only listen to Abba. I've never really had the urge to listen to anything else.

I’ll listen to anything from these two, very immersive.

It’s a bit region-specific, but I don’t mind listening to Philip Glass’ Kundun from time to time. Of course, it works best when overflying the Potala Palace.

Making an airliner approach into a busy metropolitan airport, I sometimes tune into Hijack by Hans Zimmer.

I can also recommend the Broadchurch soundtrack, featuring Ólafur Arnalds, for some immersive, ethereal background music on those long-hauls.

I guess it goes without saying, that the upbeat Wunder by Apache 207 and Ayliva is an obvious choice whenever flying in Germany. Likewise, in France and Belgium, anything by Angèle always sets the mood.

See you all over in hangar chat!

When I'm not listing to ATC Chatter, I listen to my own mixed tapes. Lately I've been listening to this:

I just had this revelation when listening to Hotel California by the Eagles: are they singing about a maze - sort of like the one in the Shining?

"You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave"

Or am I going mad? Or both??

Btw, my favourite Hotel California version is this one - sadly it gets blocked in my videos - not sure if there's a workaround. Anyway - a great song that I've used as background music when simming many a times!

Removed stuff which would probably violate the Avsim terms of use. I was reminiscing about this creature similar in form and shape to an Orangutan. It was relevant (but not essential) to the content of my post.
