Progress Update on 777-200ER and PMDG's products in MSFS 202

Back in mid-January, Robert said this, which is what led me to believe there is no plan for a simple compatibility update, but rather they are planning a paid update for 2024:

"The 737 is getting a major overhaul in preparation for its introduction into MSFS 2024. This overhaul will include new sim platform features such as walk-arounds, career mode features, upgraded textures, new models, a brand new cabin (with a working cockpit door, finally!) enhanced gameplay features and interactivity within the cabin environment, as well as a brand new sound environment built upon new, high fidelity recordings, with numerous new embedded code structures to enhance the entire sound experience and bring greater realism to the entire simming experience. Expect the 737 for MSFS 2024 to release after the 777s. This package will be available in 2024 with a small upgrade charge for previous MSFS 2020 owners, as previously discussed in other posts on the topic. (Small...you won't be repurchasing if you already own it.)"

Just a quick clarification. Yes, they did say they are revamping the 737 to 2024 standards utilizing new features, but that doesn't mean they are not going to release a "compatibility update," with no new features, as well for 2024 possibly free of charge. They haven't stated one way or the other. Of course, you could say that if they did not mention that as an option then they are not doing it.

  • I'm still very disappointed they seem to be placing the 737-800 on the back burner. It is the most flown aircraft when I look at aircraft tracking sites next to the a320.

  • They said back in December it would be a free update, has nothing to do with the A350.

  • Especially given that it’s mostly working already in 2024 as long as you start on the runway.  Should be focusing on a quick compatibility update before reinventing the 737.

Yea, given the way it is worded it just seemed to suggest that the 2024 version will be a paid update for additional features, but they have not explicitly ruled out a simple compatibility upgrade for free.

MSFS 2024. Primary Planes: Black Square TBM850, Duke, Baron, Caravan; A2A Comanche; FSReborn Phenom; Fexix A321; PMDG 737-7, 777: Utilities: Active Sky (Passive Mode); BATC, FSLTL.

Actually just saw a post on reddit, from today, that showed a pic from the pmdg forum where Mathijs said there won't be. I'm sure some will be upset about that.

Yea, I can understand that given that they never really brought that aircraft up to 2020 standard; the last updates -- which still fell short in my opinion -- came only in the months prior to 2024 release. Anyway, I am not really interested in the NG series anymore so I will almost certainly pass on a paid upgrade, but for those who really like that aircraft it may be worth the price.

De hecho, acabo de ver una publicación en Reddit, de hoy, que mostraba una imagen del foro de pmdg donde Mathijs dijo que no habrá. Estoy seguro de que algunos se enojarán por eso.

Nothing new that was not expected from PMDG I bought the 700 when it was released but I am not going to pay more for it, I prefer to continue with levelup or buy ifly.

I’m considering ifly as well but they have been radio silence about 2024 compatibility as well.

edit: meaning how it’s coming along, I know they said it will be updated for 2024.

Yea, same with me. I have been flying the NG since PMDG released it back in 2011 and have paid for it 3 times (FSX, P3D and then MSFS) and to be honest the MSFS version was a bit of a disappointment given the capabilities of the simulator.  It took them over 2 years just to finally update the LNav and even at the end the stretched textures in the entrance way were a let down. The detailed modeling of the wheel wells, something that was said would happen, never materialized. But to be fair I have just gown bored with the airframe after flying it a great deal since 2011. But given that the routes I would fly are more and more being done my a Max variant now and given the consistent and strong reviews of the iFly -- which is modelled to 2020 standards -- I too plan on going that route for 2024.

Anything on the 772LR?

It seems they have been kind of silent about that lately.  PMDG seems to have a habit of flip flopping a lot and what they say and what they do is more often than not the same thing.

Also it was pretty much said by the horse mouth himself that the MAX would release during the 777 release cycle.  All of sudden that did not happen and its tied up in some sort of commercial enterprise project.  What the heck does that even mean? I mean really??  I don't think we will ever see a PMDG MAX and it was all smoke and mirrors keeping other developers from developing one just so PMDG can have that plane cornered but it did not work!

I like PMDG products and have been a long time supporter but lately they seem to have lost direction in my opinion.

That's fair. I still love flying it personally. Honestly, I generally stick to the flight deck so while an upgraded cabin is nice to have, it's not a must for me. I'm also more of a systems guy and graphics issues aren't nearly as noticeable to me as it is for other people. I do hope that they continue to improve their VNAV/LNAV behavior though.

I imagine that they still have a team working on the LR on the side, but I don't imagine that it would take long since they release the freighter variant already.

Basically, they are working on a commercial max product with Boeing and they feel it's best not to release or streamline development on it until after they finish with their Boeing project, seems like its mainly for optics reasons.

This is what I was thinking and I hope we are correct.  Just not much if any mention of it lately.  It really just a passenger version of the 772F they already created.  So development should be streamlined.  It will likely won't set sales records for PMDG but with the less time in development it will still generate cash flow.  So I would be surprised if they quietly axed it but in this day and age who knows?

I actually think the 772A and 773ER would also be streamlined development projects and would generate some cash flow for PMDG as well but they (him) don't see it that way!

I think the real thing keeping the PMDG 737 MAX alive is if IFly decides not to develop it any further.  Not so much systems but variants.  If IFly just sticks with the 8 variant PMDG will have that angle.  If IFly does the whole MAX line we will never see a PMDG MAX.  At least not this decade.  I think they are waiting to see what IFly does? If I was IFly I would be working on turning PMDG off by announcing other MAX variants and even perhaps the NG series as well.  So far they have been pretty quiet!

Interesting times in our hobby!

Russell,

are you actually implying that for a company to produce an aircraft model that can be "ctrl-e"d as well as a full cold and dark start is lacking in integrity? That seems just a teensy bit elitist if you are indeed saying that. I would happily pay PMDG prices for a beautifully made model but only if I can fly it my way. I won't pay a single penny for any aircraft that insists I study some detailed manual just to get it in the air, or indeed get the engines running. And I doubt I'm the only person on the planet that feels that way (although I may be the only one posting on avsim that way <grin>)

No reason the same aircraft can't be made to please us both.

Andy

Age old debate.  Myself,, I find a sense of pride and theres certain cache that comes in learning a jet in detail.  I mean, for me, otherwise may as well fire up an XBox.

I'm probably reading too much in to this, but it looks like the 200ER is not too far off. Robert announced "The 200ER will come with some 30+ liveries and will also be managed via the new PMDG Operations Center 3.0, which will roll out shortly before the product release" in his post, and Mathijs is asking for help to stress test the PMDG Operations Center v3 next Tuesday.
