I guess those folks haven't traveled to many other States.

Here's my top 7 based on the geographical beauty:

1. California

2. Washington

3. Oregon

4. Colorado

5. New Mexico and Arizona - a tie for me

6. Tennessee(a bit of bias here, but it is one of the prettiest States in the Eastern USA)

7. Vermont

Bingo, this is a " back east" issue.  They need to get out more...all the Rocky Mnt States...my CA would have been 3 or 4, just too many people, but San Diego is "to die for" beautiful.

In no particular order:

Wyoming*

Montana

Idaho

Colorado*

Utah*

Arizona

New Mexico*

The five I have starred are states that I have lived in.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

These are good lists.

I've made the drive between Washington DC and Dallas many times, and I have to agree with Dave that Tennessee is the prettiest part of that trip. The roads cutting through the hills is attractive and impressive.

Virginia is nice too, especially late in the year. Autumn in New England has to be seen to be believed. The trees explode with color, and words can't do it justice. Even pictures aren't enough as they don't look quite real. Every year the DC area news publishes the date the colors will peak in the Shenandoah Valley and it's worth the trip.

We made several trips from Denver to Baltimore in the fall and always made it point to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway from end to end.  Gorgeous colors.  We always overnighted at Peaks of Otter.

The mountains in Virginia can be spectacular.
