Landing Gears Poor LOD in Both Fs2020 and Fs2024!

Featured Replies

Hi All!

I need your help to vote up an issue that have bothered me a long time with landing gears on all aircrafts.

The current issue is that when viewing aircrafts on feks, Vatsim,Ai,Online multiplayer, the landing gears just vanish when a short distance away with the camera.

The issue is somehow improved in fs2024 but not enough, But in fs2020 its terrible (specialy in VR)

Can you please help me vote up this issue so it maybe will get adressed in a future update.

Here is the link to the forum post i made.

Thanks...

I'm not sure if this is a sim or a model problem. If the model developer is not careful in the way they implement the LOD system this will happen.

I see it on some models and not on others. For example the AIG 787 suffers from it, the AIG A320 does not.

No. This is a sim issue 100% . If you use FSLTL models in 2020vs2024 you can easy see the difference in LOD behavior.

Yes, I agree that it is ridiculous. I am not even sure why they need someone like yourself to highlight the problem. It should have been addressed and corrected years ago.

Yes i agree. Its strange they did not adress this after all this years. I bet its a 5min fix for Asobo just to tweak some LOD parameters. Its a shame its hardcoded and nobody can change it with a mod.

The problem is they DID fix it a year or so ago, but it was in the wrong direction. They made LOD transitions MORE aggressive in a claim to try and improve performance.

A definite vote up in the op's thread from me.

What's even stranger is when the main gear shows but nose gear is missing...  What's the difference?

Could be that the main gear is joined together as one object so it is 'bigger' and LOD cutoff will be a little further away.

I've been complaining about this over and over again. But I have the impression that many of us simply don't care about ai a/c visuals. And maybe because of that, MS/Asobe don't care either. LOD restrictions (not only landing gears but many other airport objects too) have been entered with SU5(?)  3? years ago for XBox compatibility reasons. That was it.

I thought people were too busy ogling the rocks and gravel these days to care about what the planes looked like? 🤔😏😎

Ive been complaining about this since mfs2020 launch. But to small of a group of people voted on the issue so it was forgotten in the long list of bugs. I hoped that they would have fixed this in 2024, but sadly its still there (with some small improvements over 2020) Its most noticeable in VR mode, but also very noticeable when spotting landing  traffic with vatsim\Ai or multiplayer.

Whatever you like about flight simulation (graphics/sound/systems depth/AI Traffic etc), there is one aspect that is more important than all of them, and that is immersion. This landing gear issue is (on the surface) a very minor issue, and yet seeing AI planes floating in the air with no landing gear absolutely kills immersion!

Other issues have a similar effect on me. The areas of elevated mesh terrain that do not load until I am almost on top of them (the lighthouse area adjacent to EGPB Sumburgh/the small island directly below short final for runway 01 at LGSK Skiathos/The Needles on the west coast of the Isle of Wight/the two small islands off the south west coast of Ibiza.....the list goes on), those incredibly annoying land bars (including the double horror across Southampton Water that my poor eyes never fail to see on final approach to runway 02 at EGHI Southampton), and (probably the worst of the lot) visible joint lines and mismatched colouration of adjacent texture sets in the Bing photoscenery data.

I just wish that MS/Asobo would pay more attention to stuff like this. Flight simulation is all about realism and believability. It needs to fool my brain into thinking that I am flying a real plane in the real world, and every one of those issues screams THIS IS FAKE!

If you want to make a truly next generation flight simulator, you need to pay attention to the little things as well as the overall picture.

Another classic example of immersion killing. Allow me to introduce Land Bars 2 : The Lakes from Hell. These are south west of EHAM Amsterdam Schiphol. Oh, and I also found another joint line between mismatched base image texture sets just beyond these. Two for the price of one
