April 9, 20251 yr I'm slowly using 2024 more than 2020 now so it's mostly the lack of a few planes holding back more 2024 time. Performance is better in 2024 now for me having done some fine tuning with settings, not just Displacement Mapping but also from the video I linked here some settings def look better to me than all Ultra where 2024 initially set. Trees for example at Medium or High look much better to me, less overcrowded. That being said only a couple of issues beyond that are troubling. The biggest one of those has to do with blurry textures including sometimes the runway i'm about to land on. I would have like to see more processing resources spent on those flat textures you see all over that can be surprisingly blurry from a thousand or two AGL. Maybe SU2 addresses some of that? I occasionally run into something hard to explain: can have a lot of CPU and GPU headroom, and yet frames drop. At EHAM yesterday the CPU was coasting along with a temp of 68C (surrogate for utilization which normally gets up to 73 or 74C in highest demand areas), GPU 60% utilization and yet frames dropped to around 42FPS-native. I looked at Dev Mode FPS and this showed Main Thread increased to 24ms or so, way up over typical. Could that be streaming related, i.e. struggling to maintain a rate with insufficient scenery data to load? Overall though performance in 2024 seems excellent now even compared to 2020.
