Changed GPU Now 2024 Won't Load (Stops at 54%)

Featured Replies

So, I had this great idea that it would be nice to have 24GB VRAM so I bought an AMD RX 7900XTX to swap out from my Nvidia 4080 (can't afford to lay down $7k local currency for a 5090)

Now, MSFS 2024 will not load beyond 54% (Loading World Data ...) and my system shuts down and reboots.

This is what I have done up until now to try and fix this:

- Uninstalled Nvidia drivers

- Removed all other traces of Nvidia from my system

- Installed latest AMD drivers

- Emptied my Community folder

- Uninstalled and reinstalled MSFS several times

- Tried starting in Safe Mode with the same result

The only game I use is MSFS, but in all other things I do the system works fine.

I've now run out of ideas and am now begging for some advice from someone who may have encountered this issue or has an idea on how to fix it.

Thanks

Sounds like a cache problem to me. Probably best to Google the various MSFS cache cleaner scripts out there. If nothing else, see if you can find the old rolling cache file and delete it.

Have you monitored the GPU temp to see if it's getting too hot or it's causing your internal components inside computer case to get too hot? What's your cooling situation?

Fans, liquid cooling, how warm is the room you are operating in?

Is your PSU strong enough for that new GPU? How many Watt?

I think if it were either a power or temperature problem the the whole PC would either lock up or BSOD. I think it's the old nvidia cache files that are getting in the way. @DavidP - did you try uninstalling with DDU? Some of those MSFS cache cleaner scripts out there remove nvidia caches.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll go through them one-by-one but to answer a couple of queries:

PSU - 850W

GPU Temp last attempt to start was not above 50C, power draw <100w

Stock fan cooling on new GPU, water cooling on CPU (i9-14900)

This sounds like your GPU is crashing the whole system. I would start by using 3D mark or other similar programs (Unigine Heaven), or Furmark to stress test your GPU. You said all other things work fine, but have you stressed the new GPU to 100%?

And last ditch thing would be to reinstall Windows itself and start with a new setup.. but I wouldn't do that till you simply cannot fix it.

9800X3d, 4090, 64 GB DDR5 6000 RAM, 4 TB NVME (2x2), 4K Ultra + Framegen

A sudden power off (not a "windows is shutting down but a hard power off) is usually a hardware issue.

On the software side .. Did you run

DDU to ensure you removed every trace of NVIDIA from your system?

Did you install the adrenaline drivers and enabled the game overlay to see whats going on with the GPU in terms of clocks and temps ?

On the Hardware side

Reseat the GPU in the MB.

Ensure that the connectors to the GPU and the PSU are firmly in place

DO NOT DAISY CHAIN THE POWER CONNECTORS TO THE GPU !

Lock your FPS to 60 and try again just to check. A friend of mine had this issue when he was trying to run uncapped.

Check if your new GPU is installed properly, it seems a hardware issue to me

Missing the PMDG DC6 in MSFS 2024 (she's here, but...).

Have you taken the opportunity to put the old GPU back in to see if it loads?

Thanks for all of your suggestions.

I ran a few cache cleaners and removed all traces of Nvidia.

I also did the same to remove the AMD drivers and restored to default Windows 11 video drivers.

I could fully load 2024 so I then tried an earlier AMD driver which allowed me to get to the Start menu of MSFS and then crashed.

To test again I cleaned up and restored the default drivers again and it loaded successfully although pretty unusable.

So it seems to be an AMD driver issue so I will have to ask users of this GPU what drivers they use?

Ive had an AMD 6800XT gpu  since 2021 and a radeon software  driver has never prevented MSFS2020 or 2024 from starting.. And i update the drivers on release everytime. If i had driver issues i would never consider AMD for my next upgrade.. Yet here i am again 9070 XT and its working flawlessly. If you check the MSFS official forums this driver issue you speak of would have presented itself there. I have yet to see anything like that reported there either.

You ran a few cache cleaners but did you run DDU ? in safe mode ?
