Discontinuity in flight plan after adding approach - GTN750

Featured Replies

Further to my previous post on the correct method of entering a flightplan using the (PMS) GTN750 I have encountered a problem after adding an approach to a flight plan.

Consider the following images taken before I added an approach the flight plan and PILOS is connected to the destination airport. In the second image I have added approach ILS 35 Y and then PILOS is not connected anywhere (circled in green). What did I do wrong or what is the fix?

I searched a pilot's manual for the word discontinuity (the only term I could think of) and found nothing/

Thanks

I just had a quick look:

Did you want to select a "Transition" to ILS Y 35 like MENZI?

Have you just loaded the approach but not activated it?

From what I recall that's correct for the 750 and you need to activate the approach then click "unsuspend" at the bottom. Don't hold me to it though, its been a while since I've done some GA flying.

Thanks Vaughn. No I didn't and silly me for forgetting to do that. BTW there was only one Transition listed the other being Vectors. What happens if I select Vectors? Sorry I though only ATC issued vectors (I am very much a novice).

And what to do if there are no Transitions listed - I assume if none there will always be vectors listed?

I won't try the other suggestions now that adding the transition seems to have solved my problem however thanks for them.

I am still at the departure airport and would thus wanted the first leg activated?

Thanks for the link to the tutorials on discontinuity which I will watch tomorrow.

Hello Jarnie,  this is why I suggested you keep MOMBI in your flight plan even though it is in the approach.  Then on your way to MOMBI you can click on the MOMBI in the approach and activate the approach that way.  You said you did not want to activate it mid-flight but I believe that is how it is recommended to be done.  At least I watched a Garmin you-tube video that suggested that.  The other thing you can do is delete the airport now that the approach is loaded.  Then, I believe after you pass PILOS you will directed straight to the faf, but not sure.  I haven't tried that in a while.  I don't believe that is recommended.

Thanks Don,

Maybe as I become more familiar with flight and flight plans I will keep MOMBI

HOWEVER I now find that when I select the transition MOMBI gets 'dropped' anyway and the FP goes from PILOS to the first WP in the 'arrival' bypassing MOMBI.

Anyway thanks for your suggestion(s).

I know that when I activate an approach from the procedures icon in the GTN unit, it will send me to the faf (final approach fix) which in your case is DAMKO.  But I thought  that if you click on the MOMBI in the approach and use "direct-to" it will send you to that waypoint and start the approach.  You can delete the MOMBI in the flight plan, but you will head to the destination airport after you pass PILOS until you use "direct-to" to MOMBI.

I have struggled with this as well!  Especially for vertical navigation.  Good luck.

The root cause to all your issue is in the actual procedure (STAR) you have selected.

You have selected the LEECE 1V, which from PILOS is visual navigation *only*, all the way down to the runway. You are not supposed to connect it to a instrument approach.

For that purpose select LEECE 1A instead.

Thanks. I am unaware of that and since have found using BUNG5W (with transition MENZI) is a more direct route any way (from YGLB).

I don't know how to read charts for what you have advised and don't have a Navigraph subscription but use eith my very old edition of ERSA (Enroute Supplement Australia) and /or  https://www.airservicesaustralia.com/aip/aip.asp? for charts (but don't really know what to look for).

Don't know if you're using MSFS 2024 or 2020 but if it is 2024 you don't need Navigraph, you can use the built-in Lido charts. They even show inside the PMS50 GTN (I prefer to use them on the EFB though).

Thanks. I need to learn how to interpret STAR 'plates' (or whatever they are called)

I am using 2020 but the full version/subscription of PMS50 GTN is required (I think) and I was just trying it out before I made a decision to pay money.
