2024: Any way to see distant ai ships and planes?

Did not the developer of GAIST ships join in with Asobo for 2024 and include his package??

The problem is that some "disadvantages" are deal breakers to me, and the distance at which I can see AI ships is one of them.

Only half true.  While I'm sure that performance on xbox was a consideration for them (perfectly legitimate!), they've also improved the visuals on 2024 to an extent that if you tried to run them on 2

Its all to do with LODs and culling of objects.  This significantly changed in 2024 as opposed to 2020, presumably to try to keep performance halfway decent on xbox platforms.

XBOX great for increased sales, thus good third party support.  REALLY bad for PC users with the power to have increased LODS.  Why can't they give us a LOD setting so we can individually decide what is important to us?

I have seafront (enhanced AI copied from 2020)+ GAIST, but it also works only with GAIST

Try the following:

Set traffic to AI

start your flight with live date time

When in cockpit, disable ship traffic density (in both, VR and non-VR, I fly in VR this is why)

Go back to cockpit

Go back to settings

Enable ship traffic again, I set it to Ultra but it works with other settings too

Loading of ships takes one/two minutes but ships are there then,

Set date time to your preference

I tested it near Hamburg taking off from EDXM

PS: id this is not working, start with time set to live and then do this cycle

PPS: View distance seems ok (a few miles at least)

Well that seemed to work and ships did show up. Thank you. Now lets see if its stable.

Curious, were these GAIST ships you just saw, or live ships from Asobo?

Don't have Gaist installed right now. I think they were Seafront vessels. still doing stoopid things like spinning in place, etc. But I only saw them once and cant get them to reappear.

It's not as simple as just a LOD setting.  Each model part is processed by the SIM and displayed or culled depending on the LODs within each simobject itself.  2024 requires simobjects to have much more LODs which are progressively displayed at lower detail depending on how far away you are and how big the object is in relation to your screen size.

Simobjects imported from 2020, which did not have such an aggressive LOD system, often don't have as many levels of detail with the object itself.  This results in 2024 culling the object, hence it not displaying at bigger distances away from you.

Ideally, all 2020 content should be reworked to include more LODs so 2024 can properly display them.  2020 content is broadly compatible in that it won't crash the SIM, but also won't always be displayednin the same way it is in 2020.

It's the price of progress, a more demanding platform requires a more efficient approach to object display basically.

Understand, thanks.

Ok, I tried with gaist and now definitely have ships, but as many have said, only when you are pretty much right on top of them.

Simobjects imported from 2020,

Are you saying every aircraft that 2024 can display is hampered by LODS, because I see zero aircraft more than a mile away.  Surely 2024 has aircraft with the  increased number of LODS that it can display further away?

As I said, I can see other aircraft many miles away in XP12 and that is a modern sim.  So the fact 2024 has to run on XBOX is hindering the rest of us?  You are really saying we will never see aircraft a reasonable distance away in 2024 - I was always under the impression this was fixable!

Quite disappointing news.

The LOD behavior in 2024 is extremely/overly aggressive.  I am working on a couple airport projects with custom 3d models and it is a challenge to not have even simple shells of a building at the lowest LOD's not appear/disappear.

Yes! Thank you pemigris! Setting the Aircraft Traffic Type to AI Offline gets the GAIST ships to show in SU2 (General -> Online -> Data Connection -> Aircraft Traffic Type). I also turned the ship density on and off the first time as you described, but thereafter, the GAIST ships showed each time I started the sim. But you're right. it does take a good 3 to 4 minutes for the ships to pop in. Setting ship density to Ultra seems to be equivalent to 20% or 30% density in 2020.

Thanks again

I've been using GAIST for quite a while now with 2024. I can see ships out quite a ways, it's the Asobo (or GAYA) ships that mostly can't be seen unless you're on top of them as kevinfirth points out in his reply above.

To be more informative, I use the AI Offline setting with ships set to Ultra in the graphics setting along with GAIST directly installed in my community folder. As I said, I see the GAIST ships out for some distance, and default boats, sailboats, trawlers, etc. from the default sim near my plane and some when nearly on top of them, if at all.

The confusing part of all this is why it's taking so long for real time shipping in the sim to be fixed for 2024. I'm speculating, but it appears that GAYA produced or created the ships for 2024 but for one reason or another did not create the proper or correct number of LOD's for each model as necessary for the ships, boats, etc. to show up properly in the sim using the coding method developed by Asobo. The result is we're seeing a minimal number of ships in real time if at all because of these LOD issues. I am just guessing here, many of you probably have more knowledge of this than I do.

So, when is GAYA (or Asobo) going to complete the LOD conversion (or addition of new LOD's) to make this work properly for all of the ships and boats? It's been 6 months now... is it going to happen at all? Is this a squabble between GAYA and Asobo? That's the thing: we as users are not privy to information behind the scenes and are not told, for example, "well, they are working on it so just be patient for another 6 months, or it's pretty close now...just wait a little longer and it will be ready". It can be pretty frustrating at times.

LOLZ...

Using the Seafront ships, I guess both my "no ships" and my distance problem might be solved.

I noticed this kerfluffle from so far away that it took me nearly 30 minutes to fly out to it.....

But surveying the situation, I guess you cant have everything..... 🤔

yes, unfortunately I also saw this kind of "gang bang" near Hamburg. Other ships went full steam back, probably being frightened by the sight 🙂
