2024: Any way to see distant ai ships and planes?

Shipping LODs are all messed up,

The entire games LOD is messed up. Not sure why there wasn't more outcry about this, or maybe now people are noticing? Same with airport objects such as taxi signs etc... and AI aircraft, with their landing gears popping in to place. It is a 'visual' mess.

  • THE problem here is that it was part of the huge advertising bull* of MSobo regarding MSFS2024 with the trailer showing tons of ships of all sizes and once again, they do not deliver. Half-baked featu

The problem is that some "disadvantages" are deal breakers to me, and the distance at which I can see AI ships is one of them.

Only half true.  While I'm sure that performance on xbox was a consideration for them (perfectly legitimate!), they've also improved the visuals on 2024 to an extent that if you tried to run them on 2

It's not as simple as just a LOD setting.

I was always thinking at some point MS/Asobo would 'fix' the viewing distance of aircraft at some point, by allowing PC users the option to increase it if their system allows.  The rest of 2024 is fantastic.

I love everything about flying in VFR in 2024, except this ridiculous short viewing distance.  I really hate not being able to keep a lookout for other aircraft that will never be seen, until they are really close - this is just 'immersion breaking'.  Your reply seems to suggest this viewing distance will never be fixed because of the XBOX platform compatibility.

So, I installed a fresh copy of XP12 and added the LiveTraffic plugin.  Next was the Map Enhancement tool for XP12.  Global Forests and SimHeaven followed.  Spawned at Heathrow and immediately the sky was full - 200 aircraft!  Flew for a couple of hours over the same satellite imagery I can see in 2024.  Vapour trails everywhere, aircraft viewable 25 miles away (LiveTraffic setting).

My XP12 disadvantage column is much smaller now because of the thought MS/Asobo will never fix viewing distance.  Of course 2024 has many advantages over XP12, yet they seem less important when the sky is full of traffic.

I'm back in XP12 now, giving it a hard look again, because the thought of viewing distances never being improved in 2024 is quite a disappointment.  We all have that one thing that is a deal breaker, and the idea that LOD/viewing airborne traffic will never be fixed is one for me.

I thought the aggressive LOD issue was to be addressed in SU3?

Careful, you'll get called all sorts in here for saying you're using XP12!

I agree though, to each their own, but for me the advantages in 2024 over XP12 are minimal, and the advantages in XP12 outweigh the ones in 2024. However that is just for me, I suppose it all depends on what you see as priority. One thing is for certain, XP12 userbase seems to have had a lot more interest in the last 6-8 weeks. 2024 is starting to frustrate a smaller number more % more of users by the looks of things.

Also careful what you whish for. If you get those complaining masses of simmers into XP12, gone will be the niche-status etc. and the whining and complaining will fill XP forums 😉

Greetings, Chris

I'm not abandoning 2024, but giving XP12 another look.

I think here may have been behind the scenes influence from various developers to MS/Asobo about the LODs situation?  I don't have any direct involvement and I don't know if that's something that may change in SU3, so lets wait and find out.

It's not like Asobo accidentally changed the LOD - they did it on purpose performance. A lot of stuff was done in MSFS2024 to improve performance, like more strict LODs, lower satellite photo resolution (also kind of bound to LODs) etc.

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

Maybe the aggressive LOD system has been introduced because of now streaming nearly everything?

They did it to make the sim playable for XBox.

This YouTube video explains how the new LOD works.  MSFS 2024 SDK Tutorial - The "new" LOD Selection system, by Federico Pinotti.

Need a button to switch settings for PC or XBox.

Well if that is true, then it’s a shambles.

I know it can be done, I got the Seafront Hawaii package, and it works beautifully with a lot of ships all over the islands.
