Electric Porsche 928

Featured Replies

I'm sure there are many that will see this as sacrilege.

I don't think the 928 is particularly inspiring though is it?

Personally, I like the stuff these guys do. Up to date suspension, brakes and electric power teain. More performance than the car had originally.

Guys...as long as the conversation says on the subject of EV's or EV conversions, then all is well.   Let's not continue with electrical power generation, etc!  That will bring out the 🔒

Is it just me, or is anyone else not particularly inspired by electric cars?

Love it, building or conversions are surprisingly easy for EVs.  So much simpler than ICE.

What ever happened to Edd China?

I prefer MGuy Australia channel. As always, your mileage may vary.

It's a different experience, for sure. Performance is better due to the immense torque but some petrol heads wouldn't like the lack of that iconic V8 sound.

I like em though, but then I'm bound to because some of them sound like a science fiction space craft. 😁 in a less raucous way of course.

Does this acceleration do it for you, Christopher?

Do you own one or have driven one for a couple of weeks?  If it’s really just about the noise and smell of harmful exhaust you miss …

… well KIA EV 6 has a solution for the noise, but not the smell

I love my EVs, I can feel the acceleration without all the noise and gear shift drama.

But if you prefer a noisier EV with 2000+ hp and jaw dropping looks:

Or RIP some incredible wheel spin:

If you think these are boring, well … I’m gonna go with “it’s just you” for $500. 😉

Heh!  "Gear shift drama."

You know the best anti-theft device you can have for your car these days is a manual shift. 😄

Loved my 1976 four speed VW Scirocco.

It wouldn't do me any good to have a car that would go that fast. I don't have anywhere to drive it like that. There weren't many race tracks on my daily commute.

The last car I had was a diesel. Zero to 60 in 15 minutes, and with a good head start I could break the speed limit. Even then I had a Valentine One radar detector. Best speed for the engine was calculated at 72 mph. I seldom had it over 80.

Maybe I'm just old, but these days I tend to stay within the posted speed limits. I discovered that it's a lot less stressful. I once drove that diesel from DC to Dallas in 30 hours straight, at the speed limit, stopping only for fuel. I wasn't even tired at the end. Previous trips took 28(?) hours driving plus a 6 hour nap in the middle and I was exhausted at the end, pushing the speed limits. Wasn't worth it.

And then there's the other traffic on the road. The fastest Cannonball Run was during lockdown, with little other traffic. With no other traffic and long straight roads and little enforcement you can drive whatever speed you like. We don't live in that world.

I'll go with a more practical car, even if it's a little slow and a little boring. And a heck of a lot cheaper.

The 928 was designed for the American market because it was the model that had a front engine V8 to compete against Corvette or Mustang or Trans Am etc. I agree it was the least appealing of their 80s lineup and American V8 fans didn't care for it either. K.I.T.T. was far cooler then a 928 even though in reality the 928 was far more superior in performance and quality then Pontiac's were

For me the 944 was the best car from the 80s era, high performance 4 cylnders with a rear transmission for balance and looked cool, and of course the 911 is timeless throughout all the decades

I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

What I love about my EVs is using manual energy recovery rather than wasting braking energy.  I rarely use the brakes and use steering wheel paddle to engage energy recovery when i need to slow.

If you prefer a relaxed experience then driving EV is a perfect solution.  Very quiet, very easy to drive, and distances sensing cruise control with low latency.

No idea why people seem to think EVs are expensive??  Perhaps drinking the Tesla coolaid thinking that’s the only option?  Chevy Bolt 28K new full loaded with leather and all bells and whistles, 315 mi real range.  Hyundai Kona EV, 35k and 325 real world miles.

Dodge RAM truck diesel $100K … I can buy 3 EVs for the price of a Dodge Truck.

Some EVs are expensive and that primarily due to high profit margins as demand is high.  But many EVs are not.  One method to control price gouging is by keeping state rebate incentives only for EVs below 50K.

The Fiat 500 Abarth electric does the same, A speaker under the boot. First thing I'd do is turn it off.

That was what I meant by science fiction acoustics. 😁 I couldn't handle that silly yoke, though.

I think Chris might be inspired by that Lotus. Testosterone boost, achieved! 💪

Not for we Brits. Manual transmission is in our blood. Babies slip out of the womb with their tiny hands switching imaginary gears and their baby feet operating a clutch.

Men, and an increasingly number of women, have been modifying their vehicles since the times of mass production/availability of cars themselves.

IMHO, many of us were around to remember the "hotrods" of the 60's and 70's (and some even the 50's), and I think about the various cars I have built through the decades.

I still appreciate car shows that showcase this "individuality" of builds. I tell myself that that I'll always be an ICE guy, but, the reality is (if I live a long life like my parents), an electric vehicle will likely be an inevitable at some point...with proposed legislation coming in the 2030's for the abolishment of the sale of new ICE vehicles where I live.

While I can appreciate the passion that builders put into their vehicles, admittedly, not all of these custom builds suit my taste...the Porsche 928 above falls into that category. Again, it's only my opinion. But kudos to the builder...his money...his passion...

Back to the electric question...my last "hotrod" I built (and currently own) is a 1972 Porsche 914 that I converted into a GT spec reproduction/clone with a 2.7 dual plug/twin weber flat 6. Parts for those 1960's tech motors are becoming increasingly hard to come by. As I was restoring this vehicle, in the back of my mind I couldn't help but think in another 10 years as the current motor becomes "tired", this car may be a good candidate for an electric conversion (a few people have already done it and there is a readily available motor/controller that will bolt up to the existing gearbox).

For now, I'll continue to enjoy (the sounds and smell) of my existing ICE sports car...not ruling out an electric in the (distant) future. And yes, where I live, a manual transmission is a theft deterrent!  🙂
