KTUL - Fly2High Performance Problems 2024

Featured Replies

I'm curious if anyone else has been using the 2024 version of KTUL from Fly2High. This company hasn't been terrible and most of their products for 2020 were ok, but this version of KTUL they've released for 2024 is becoming a nightmare. I purchased the product day 1 and 2020 works fine; however, 2024 seems to have some serious terrain and performance issues. They announced today in a very confusing Facebook post that a 2024 "upgrade" has been released. No changelog, very few details, and an explanation on how exactly to upgrade that still leaves me baffled. The scenery doesn't look horrible but the pop in and terrain issues are pretty crazy. This is a relatively small airport with not a lot around it, so it shouldn't tax the system too hard. I'm getting significant performance drops as I get closer to the field regardless of aircraft used. You'll see the stuttering and miserable experience I have as I get within a mile of the field.

I'm also running a pretty beefy rig and can handle airports like KSFO from Flightbeam in 4K without any issues. Below is a video I recorded and I'm just trying to see if anyone else is experiencing the same.

I'm experiencing the same performance issues in 2024. I usually have BATC injecting traffic and airports like KSFO, KLAX , KDFW I'm getting 50-60 FPS but at KTUL with much less traffic its down to 35-40 FPS

I think it's partly the scenery, and partly the sim.   I don't have this scenery, but, I have another scenery that says it is "compatible" with 2024, and it performs similarly to what you're seeing at TUL in your video (actually, worse).

I think some of these devs are simply re-working their manifest.json and other files to make it officially compatible, but they aren't actually going through the 3D assets to make them perform like they're supposed to in 2024.

That said, I also think there's a memory leak in 2024 right now.  I can't prove that (how would I?) but when you vram-starve a 4090 I think something is wrong...

It's just a hunch, but I am guessing this is not a 'native' 2024 airport so it was likely created in 2020 (no LOD requirements) and just made to mostly work with 2024. If it was built using the 2020 SDK, you do not have to abide by the strict LOD rules for 2024 so it is possible they did very poor LOD work (if any at all) and you will get these stutters as you approach the airport as they load in.  Again, just a hunch and cannot verify since I do not own it (nor will I)...

They are a terrible dev regarding their sceneries performance and details. I wouldn’t pay even $1 for their junk.

YES! This is one of my home airports, and I was so excited to try it out, and my substantial rig is getting GPU exceedance notifications. It looks great, but this performance is ridiculous. I'm uninstalling and asking for a refund.

Yes. This scenery is terrible with object's popping in and out. Jetways disappearing and reappearing. Studders and micro freezes. They need to learn how to develop scenery for FS2024

In FS2020 I ended up uninstalling their KRSW scenery. It was so lacking that I replaced it with VerticalSim version. I have had worse luck with MSFScenerybuilders. KRIC was terrible and for some reason I got their KAVP (the only one I could find) and it is hardly any better than default but terrible performance and stutters. I uninstalled both.

KRIC was AXONOS or FeelThere. Unless I'm mistaken?

I replaced it with Feelthere. Not bad and much better than msfsbuilders. Now if I could just find a KROA.

Ah, ok. Yeah the one from msfsbuilders was pretty terrible. AXONOS wasn't too bad. I'm a Richmond native, so I wanted it to be as perfect as possible haha.

I have their PVD scenery and it murders my fps.  And there are a lot of glitches.  This was in 2020.

Don't think they know how to optimize.

One of the biggest frustrations when purchasing airport scenery is poor optimization. I have large detailed airport addons that look great with hardly any impact on performance, and then throw money away on small airports that are simplistic and barely look better than default that cause stutters. Purchase in marketplace good luck getting refund.

I completely agree with you. In my opinion, more and more MSFS 2024 sceneries are being released without proper optimization. One red flag for me is when a scenery is marketed as a 2020/2024 combo. Some developers, like FlightBeam, seem to handle things well, but you're absolutely right, it's mind-blowing when a smaller airport like KTUL performs worse than a major hub like KSFO.

Reducing texture resolution to medium from ultra yielded a slight improvement, so I suspect a few of you are spot on and the scenery just isn't 2024 optimized. Anyone have luck changing anything else?
