Do You Play Videogames?

Featured Replies

I'm more of a video gamer than a simmer at this point.  Up until recently I played a lot of mutliplayer FPS games like COD, although I am semi-retired from those (Battlefield 6 MAY bring me back).  Still I love single player games.  Right now I'm playing a lot of Ready or Not (a swat/police FPS game).  I recently finished the smaller RPG Outer Worlds and started Avowed.  I love the Civilization series, but don't find the time.  I've always loved turn based games like Xcom.  I mix in a little PGA2k25 to relax as well.

Most weeknights, I simply don't have time for MSFS.

I don't see myself ever not being a gamer.  At some point I'm going to get too old for FPS games, but there's still so many great turn based and other games that don't require reaction times.

I got an Atari 2600 when I was 5 years old, and never looked back.  The idea of not playing video games wouldn't even make sense to me.  There's so many options out there for everyone as well, it isn't like you have to play Fortnite with the kids.

Hm.  GT Legends is on sale on Steam at $1.99, down 75% from $7.99.  To buy or not to buy?

Some time ago I bought Command HQ at $0.99 but haven't played it yet.  I used to love it when it was new and figured I'd grab it "just in case" as it was cheap as free.

Last game I played was a few years ago:  Derail Valley.  Loved the steam train.

Haven't played much in years.  I don't know if my aging computer would appreciate the stress.

I'm often tempted to fire up Vehicle Simulator (successor to Virtual Sailor) as I've modified another square rigger to be the HMS Surprise.  Lots of mod work on that one, and it looks good and is fun to sail.

When it's on Steam for $1.99 just buy it, even if you tinker for a few hours that works out to the equivelent of playing Space Invaders for 25 cents in intertainment value back in the 70s

I tend to buy a lot of legacy games on Steam Sales because even though they are old, most of them are patched to at least run on modern PC's with higher resolutions and wide screen monitors now. Some of the older strategy games are better today in wide screen.

I loved GT Legends back in the day. I would seriously consider buying a GT Legends 2 if it appeared. Modern race cars are boring to me. Lots of downforce, and utterly lifeless. Racing those 60s and 70s classic cars is where the fun is, or the road cars in Assetto Corsa.

I play a few video games, beside our flight simulators.

There has been many genres:

- car driving (racing) games, including old and newer ones (Grand Prix Legends, Assetto Corsa, Art of Rally...),

- quite a few FPS exploration games (Elder Scrolls from Morrowind and onwards, Ark Survival Evolved, Thief I and II, Dishonored, Mirror's Edge etc...),

- quite a few 2D games such as Mark of the Ninja, Limbo, and very recently I had a blast with the remake of WonderBoy III Dragon's trap 😄

- and of course, the good old Point&Click classics, right ? (Monkey Island(s), Sam&Max, Day of the tentacle, etc...).

That being said, the very modern stuff tends to set me off... it may be a generation gap or something, I don't know. A very simple example to illustrate would be Doom. Loved the old ones, never felt the need to play the modern one... it doesn't look nice to me, it doesn't look fun either.

Oh, and I absolutely love Star Citizen, even though my current hardware cannot run it decently anymore, and they refuse to implement any VR support.... 😞

The modern Doom games are very very..... Kinetic.

I find them harder than the Doom games in my memory because its pretty obvious my reflexes are not quite as... catlike, as they once were.

So.... Just idle musing, do you think there might be something about Flightsimming that tends to invite hostility (or indifference) to general gaming, or is my perception of an aversion to gaming/gamers here just incorrect?

Your perception used to be absolutely correct, but only for a small and vocal segment of the community.  I've been surprised that this thread hadn't attracted considerable hate speech.

I'm guessing that the vocal segment has moved to a different forum.

My gaming desires have moved on significantly since I played (and enjoyed) Doom way back in 1993. It was revolutionary and exciting back then to move around (relatively) realistic 3D environments and shoot lots of stuff. These days, endless shooting is boring. I am looking for something more cerebral and atmospheric. I remember playing the first few levels of Doom 3, but I quickly became bored. I wanted it to be a more tense and unpredictable gaming experience (think wandering around darkened rooms and corridors/flickering lights/scary sounds in the distance/glimpses of something nasty in other parts of the base that I could see if I looked out of a window.....that kind of thing). Unfortunately, after the first two or three levels, it became just another test of how quickly I could press the trigger. The latest version of Doom does not stir anything in me at all.

Try the Aliens total conversion of Doom if you can still find it. 😄

That one definitely scared me.

The thing is, the "old" Doom games 1 & 2 are now available through Steam and I played them with great pleasure not so long ago. That old gameplay was very satisfying to me.

The newer games, they remind me of when the first "Quake" appeared, which was a significant graphic update (3D vs 2D), but was much less fun to play, because the enemies were not "impacted" by your shots until they reached the death trigger, contrary to Doom where each shot was visually impactful...

Beside the Edler Scrolls, I think the one of the very few "modern" games that really provided me full satisfaction on the gameplay was Dishonored, which I considered as the real and only successor to Thief 1 and Thief 2.

Then you might try something like Dead Space (Available for free on Gamepass) where you have to strategically injure enemies to take them down.....

I've always enjoyed the technical aspect of flightsimming, and still do in P3Dv5.3.  A fellow simmer persuaded me to try driving a truck and I enjoy the relaxing experience of cruising around Europe or the States in ETS2 or ATS.  No complexity, no planning, just admiring the scenery go by.  Maybe the fact that these days I'm probably the most ancient person lurking around these forums has some relevence.  🙂

I did a few years of Truck Sim, I even went out and bought a Thrustmaster Force Feedback Steering Wheel with clutch and gears for the added realism. To be honest that novelty wore off because I found myself back to driving those trucks with the keyboard again just because I found that more relaxing. Truck Sims are the ultimate low and slow way of discovering Europe or Western USA.

The new Doom games are beyond me too.  It is weird, because I could play COD at a reasonably well above average skill.  There's just something about the moving and shooting that just overloads my old brain cells.  I wanted to love it, so much that I forced myself to play for awhile until I realized I wasn't having fun.  I can appreciate it, but I'm probably a few decades too old.

Woot!  Just discovered this.

Google:  "silver snipers" for more.

Quote

The "Silver Snipers" are a unique Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) team composed of players over the age of 60, aiming to challenge ageism in esports. They were formed with the goal of competing at Dreamhack, a major digital festival in Sweden. The team, sponsored by Lenovo, gained attention for their passion and skill, proving that age is not a barrier to competitive gaming.
