Is this real? Miltech is asking for tips during purchase?

Ridiculous statement. For a start, Europe is not a country. In my country, service usually is very good. And when it's good, I give a tip.

Luckily, people here don't need tips, they get paid sufficiently.

I never said Europe is a country, but you do have a European Union so it’s not a faux pas to refer to Europe in the collective, just as we have a United States which is a Union and most people will refer to it as the USA instead of listing every state.

And within most European countries, it’s a customary practice for restaurant service staff to have the majority of their compensation paid via wages instead of tips. And compared to the US, service is subpar. I’ve been to England, Wales, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, etc. multiple times. I never once left a restaurant thinking how fantastic the service was.

The point being, people who get rewarded directly based on their performance tend to be more motivated to do a better job. Secondly, when an employer has to pay a higher wages with benefits, they have less incentive to have adequate staff coverage unlike when most of the expense is not borne by them, especially when their competition has similar compensation practices.

My entire original point was to refute the expressed opinion that staff should be paid mostly in wages and not tips.

  • They’re asking if customers would like to give them extra cash for no extra service. It seems like a daft encroachment of US tipping culture where it’s really not warranted.

There may be no harm in it, but I find it a bit crass to ask for tips. Oh, and whilst we are on the subject, restaurants in the US should pay their staff a decent wage rather than expecting them to "m

Well, he did say he's "been all over Europe"...

Maybe he visited the wrong restaurants. There are hundreds of restaurants in my city alone.
Or maybe he was not treated well because he was loud, entitled and arrogant, as some Americans are known for.

Yeah, we are all loud, arrogant obnoxious boors. I love Europe and admire many things about it over the culture in the US. I have no problem faulting out practices, like how we build a fast food restaurant on every corner and every exit off a highway, cluttering the landscape. Or how Europe has a far better approach to land management versus the urban sprawl we have here. So my post was not intended to trigger anyone.

Hmm, I have never been to the US, but I have been to England, Wales, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Austria.
I even live in one of them and last night was in an Indian restaurant (In England but serving Indian food) where the service was,
as ever, excellent and a tip was left.
In my experience, there is excellent service to be found in all of those countries and in the case of Germany and Switzerland,
I have in the past, been the waiter at your table.

Sometimes it is impossible to please customers, mostly because of the customers themselves.
One of the biggest mistakes for a foreigner in someone else's country to make, is to assume that the country they are in shares
the same values and culture as the ones where they come from.
In particular, I suspect in this case, the fast food approach, where nothing has to be waited for.
All good things come to those that wait and a quick look at US population statistics speaks volumes about the effects of fast food.

Here’s a tip.  Lock this pointless  thread because it is fast becoming divisive.  I thought Avsim existed to discuss Flight Sims and Aviation.  Has its mission changed?

Wow!  You are not doing yourself any favors posting like this.

Why? The truth hurts?

By the way, I've met many very nice Americans as well.

It took only 5 days for Nederland army to surrender during German invasion in WWII. Then a long, almost 5 years, wait for arrogant loud entitled American to liberate them. LOL  I see where your "love" for Americans are coming from LOL

This is getting childish.

By the way, among those that liberated Europe were many African Americans. Who did have to return to their segregated cities after the war was over.

We are not in this thread to rudely denigrate Americans.  We're in this thread to discuss Miltech's tip option.

Which according to others may have been a mistake, it's a default option for their store software.

Neither to rudely denigrate European restaurants.

I do not denigrate Americans, I denigrate some Americans. Every country has less pleasant people in its population.

Try to read what I wrote, not what you imagine I wrote. You are escalating for no reason.

This thread is so pointless. Tipping is an option on that e-commerce platform, and they left it on. Who cares? Only AVSIM.

Actually, that’s useful information if it’s the e-commerce site that does it and it’s an opt out that they forgot.

But saying ‘Who cares? Only AVSIM.’ when the very first post is a link to a fairly energetic Reddit discussion?
