I Highly Recommend Active Sky for MSFS 2024

Weather in XP12 is incredibly realistic. If you wanna experience what flying through frontal cloud layers is truly like.....XP12 excels to the point that I plan my flights just to fly through frontal cloud layers! I'm a IRL pilot and meteorologist working for the UK met office....and believe you me...the depiction of all clouds types - cirriform, convective clouds (including CBs and normal shower clouds) and multilayered stratiform frontal clouds is mind-blowing...no exaggeration! It's amazing.

I used to use it until I realized exactly what @AnkH says – it doesn’t depict distant weather systems. Instead of showing a storm on the horizon for example, you’d gradually find the clouds around you

An Exeteer... 🙂

PT MetOffice here,  LPPTeer... and GPL(EASA since 2021, ICAO since 1980).

And I fully concur with your thoughts, although I love ASFS....

Is there any add-on for MSFS 2024 that will just modify the wind aspect and turbulence?  I must admit, I’ve yet to do an MSFS 2024 flight where the wind is even remotely close to real world weather.  It does happen “sometimes” but it’s pretty rare it will be accurate (for wind/turbulence, visually it’s great).

The MSFS 2024 “Realistic” turbulence setting isn’t realistic at all, not even close … not even sure it works at all?  I’m starting to lose interest in MSFS 2024 because of this issue with wind and turbulence … which is a big shame because it’s a great simulator in most other aspects.

active sky in 'passive' mode, uses in sim live weather, but wind and turbulence and lots of other details are controlled by active sky alone.

Lots of people swear by this app, don't use it myself but keeping an eye on it:

It would be brilliant to have cloud turbulence as default in the sim, along with moisture / droplets on the windshield as you fly through them.
They should really be a default features rather than having to buy AS or Realturb for such simple features.
However, Asobo are busy making Shift+C notifications at the moment.

Which you can get rid of. Thankfully.

Just bought AS... looking forward to it! I have it set to live weather... for those that use it, is there a better setting or things i should do?

Cheers

I’ll reach out to Damien … ActiveSky in the prior sims was outstanding.  In “passive mode” can I operate only on wind/turbulence and leave the rest (cloud render/layers) per MSFS 2024 Live?  Assume I will need to disable A2A Aerostar 600 turbulence settings?

For those who are new to ASFS , here's some decent settings for transitions. YMMV

Download Interval = 15

Depiction Smoothing Rate = 20

Periodic Theme Reload Interval = 5

passive mode only deals with wind\turbulence, fog layers if you set that in options. all wxr is the in sim live weather. passive mode  doesnt interfere with the weather.

Purchased, installed, set to Passive mode ... bring up Options in AS ... but not clear what options are relevant when in Passive mode?  My expectation was that AS options NOT relevant when in "Passive Mode" would be disabled or not visible ... but they are ALL enabled yet some are clearly about cloud depiction?

Did a very quick flight in A2A Aerostar 600 out of KHIO.  Navigraph shows very high winds (25+).  National Weather Service for KHIO shows low winds (6-8).  HiFi AS reports 0-2.  Takeoff, zero winds, zero turbulence.  MSFS 2024 visual cloud/fog depiction was pretty close to real ... but again, no winds, no turbulence (I have random in-flight turbulence set to 50 in AS), nada.

I'll try a different aircraft at a different location with high winds and see if I something to happens.

My understanding is I can leave MSFS 2024 "Live Weather" enabled when using AS Passive mode ... is that correct?

From AI:

When using Active Sky FS (ASFS) in

Passive Mode, the simulator's (MSFS) internal live weather system is in full control of the weather depiction. Therefore, most of the specific settings intended for ASFS's Active Mode (Preset weather depiction) do not work or are superseded by the simulator's own logic.

However, some "live mode" related features and effects provided by ASFS still function:

  • Active Air Effects: ASFS still provides enhanced weather effects such as turbulence and thermals, which are often non-existent or very basic in the default simulator's live weather.
  • Non-Depiction Features: Other features of the Active Sky application itself continue to work, including:
    • Mapping and flight planning features.
    • Weather reports and ATIS.
    • Voice features and the web companion app.
    • Flight summaries.
    •
The key distinction is that in Passive Mode, ASFS reads and enhances the simulator's live weather with effects and information features, but it does not inject or control the base weather conditions (clouds, precipitation, baro, etc.) within the simulation environment, which is the primary function of its Active Mode.
